How 80's ... you'd think there would be a new term for the snotty pretentious people ... ok, how about "snuppies"?

Default Broad Ripple or Northside

If you have a young family, the Broad Ripple area or the north side (Nora or Carmel, depending on income-- nicer areas in Carmel can become very expensive) would be perfect. I grew up in Broad Ripple. Many things are withing walking distance, the area has many old homes and beautiful streets with lots of trees, it's affordable, and its residents are mainly young professionals and young families. The busing system for schools can be weird in Indianapolis (it changed years back to accommodate lower-income families into some of the higher-income schools), so you'll have to check that before you move, but most of the schools in the area are very good. I'll be biased and say that Washington Township is a terrific school system (check the ratings). Best of luck!

Unless you are talking about Irvington, the east side is such a shame to our wonderful city. And the best food is in Broad Ripple.

I wouldn't go that far. Sure, there are many pockets of the east side that are a shambles, but there are just as many that are improving. Little Flower is getting better (possibly because of it's proximity to Irvington), and the near East side neighborhoods like Holy Cross are poised for massive transformation. Take a drive down 10th Street just east of downtown and check out the improvements that have occurred there over the last couple of years.

If anything, I'd argue that the west and southwest side neighborhoods are the most stagnant in the city.

I lived in the Holy Cross area wow 1994-5 and they were starting to make strides back then. Remember taking the kids trick or treating in Woodruff and then heading west the whole 2 minutes in lockerbie. In all honesty after living, dt, east, north, nw and south, I do prefer the south side over the north side. Franklin Township was wonderful, quiet, no heavy industry and can get the same all of the same types of houses in Hamilton county for way less. Same restaurants and Greenwood Park Mall, 15-20 minute drive to Edinburg for shopping as well. Great park in Southeastway park and it's larger than Holiday.

Johnson county severely lacks diversity where I live now and there are certain parts of Center Grove that can be just as snobbish as the more ritzy areas of Carmel and Zionsville. Only difference is Center Grove is far away from everything it's not worth the commute.

hello there. I have lived in indianapolis for the last 7 years and i live on the northside in castleton right on 82nd and allisonville road. I have a 5 year old son and i love it there. The traffic is crazy between 5 and 6:30 and sometimes on the weekend and during the holiday. THe schools are great and there is castleton square mall, plenty of banks, and restaraunts near by. I wouldn't live anywhere else in indy and the rent is reasonable to me. Good luck with your decision!!!!
