Just in case you haven't fully committed, a drive from Fishers or Noblesville isn't necessarily that terrible. Back when I was in high school I live on the West Side of Carmel near Zionsville and my mom drove from our house to Muncie for work. She took 146th street and hated it. With that said, she always talked about how if she lived near 69, she really wouldn't even mind the commute. Depending on how fast you drive and where in Noblesville you would live, the commute could be around 45 minutes, which isn't terrible. Just thought I'd give a different perspective since personally, I could never live in Muncie.

I'm actually in a similar boat, I have an interview at BSU soon and have never been to Muncie. From what I can tell Muncie is so so. Can you please just tell me what areas and apartment complexes you recommend and which ones to avoid? I'm looking for nice affordability, peace and quiet, and safety.

Default Update!

I wish I could reply more specifically to some of your suggestions, because they were very informative, but I've been extremely busy because...I am officially moving to Muncie this weekend!

Turns out, the vast majority of the suggestions I'd heard are, in fact, unfair over-generalizations. I ended up driving there yesterday and spent the day touring different houses, as well as just driving up and down random streets so that I could note streets/developments/additions that looked good. Even though I couldn't make it all over, there are a TON of nice areas that I would feel extremely comfortable living and walking in.

The visitor's bureau people were extremely helpful! They gave me a huge city map and we circled "good" areas and crossed out the areas to avoid. It's worth noting that my map has far more circles areas than x's. By the end of my visit, I narrowed it down to four potential rentals, all in different areas of town, and then signed a lease for one of them this morning!

Let's just say lesson learned: while people's suggestions may be well-intended, they can often be hearsay or exaggerations...so visiting the area before you move is highly recommended!

Random side note: I visited Indy after I left Muncie, and saw the rush hour traffic on I-69 N, especially all the cars backed up at each of the Fishers' exits. Although I've read about it on this board, I wasn't prepared for a jam THAT intense...that traffic is no joke!

While the town has apartment complexes, I noticed that people primarily rent houses, townhomes, or houses converted into small-unit apartments. I knew I didn't want an apartment (complex or house-like) so I didn't pay too much attention to them, and looked at homes instead. But if you PM with some more details (rent, if you're open to houses, etc) I'll try to help!

To anyone thinking of moving to Muncie:
I grew up in Muncie. Lots of very nice homes and apartments on the west and northwest side of town (W of Tillotson Dr.) That's where I suggest you start. And some streets within 5 minutes of BSU that are as nice as Noblesville. Historical neighborhoods of E. Washington Street E. of downtown, but that's for a hardy soul and someone dedicated to rehabbing their Victorian.
If you're going to "commute," live in Yorktown or the area N of muncie by Indiana Rt. 28, and limit your commute to 10-15 minutes. That's part of Muncie's appeal. Otherwise there's little need to drive from, say, Fishers. Life's too short to spend half your life on I-69. Visit Fishers and Noblesville (and Indy) on the weekends. Keep the rents (and expenses) low and stay in (or right next to) Muncie.
It's a nice old factory town, and the college keeps it young. A nice town, with good folks rich and poor.
Try Pizza King and you'll never move (but if you do, they ship from their website). Hope it works out for you.
