Superbowl is big business and big exposure. If it weren't the competition to get it wouldn't be as fierce as it is. The most watched event on the planet with the hosting city being highlighted constantly via name, blimp views etc for weeks and that gets quadrupled the day of. You can't buy that type of publicity around the globe. Indy is known for being able to put on huge events and not bat an eye (since it does it every year multiple times already) unlike a lot of other cities. If they pull this off in the winter no less it would solidify this city as being one of the best sporting venue cities across the globe and not just in the US.

I'm more concerned about the knuckleheads that will undoubtedly want to make an appearance downtown and the naysayers who will b*%ch about roads being blocked, our taxpayer money this and that and blah blah blah. In order for a city to grow it has to take chances just like any business does in order to be successful.

The city doesn't need to be saved, it's already vibrant and thriving but it is ready to go to the next level.

Not sure why you're bringing this up in this thread, but I don't think anyone sees hosting the Super Bowl as a savior. I don't believe Indy needs to be saved. She's pretty healthy, but clearly there are things that need to be done to improve the quality of life here.

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest single-day sporting events in the world, so it is a big deal that Indy is hosting it. Will that make us "big time"? It'll probably come down to how well we do as a host, and that's why you're seeing so much attention being paid to it. But if we do a good job, I see no reason why we can't host again. Detroit/Pontiac has hosted it twice. Minneapolis could probably host again as well if it had a more suitable stadium. But will it be a huge economic driver? Of course not, and I think everyone understands that.

The city trying to "save" it's self was probably true back in the 70's when it was losing population and downtown was known as naptown but it has already advance beyond that with so many improvements over the decades while some cities today are still trying to figure out how to save themselves from a bleeding population. Actually, the Super Bowl will not be the only big event held in this town. Indy has something every year that no city has a stadium big enough could ever support...the INDY 500. The race attracts people from different countries to the event showing support for each race team from Italy or Brazil etc.. (basically our own Olympics). It is not domestic like NASCAR. IMS still holds the world record as being the single largest sporting facility that has been known to hold as many as 400-500 thousand people. That's more than any stadium capacity in the entire country. The city also held the GoodWill games back in 1987 but the SuperBowl will be another addition to hosting a game. The city has a solid reputation for hosting huge sporting events. This is nothing new by any means. If Indy can host a huge event like the INDY 500 every year (which hold more spectators than Lucas Oil or the largest stadium in the country) it should have no problem accommodating the SuperBowl. There are plenty of hotels and amenities in one of the most vibrant downtowns in the country. With the new 1 billion dollar airport terminal, expanded highway infrastructure, convention center, more businesses downtown..it's doing pretty well at saving itself I think.

funny I thought the super bowl was held once a year. If we have it once we can sure have it again. Not only that but hosting the event in the first place will give us much needed worldwide exposure and the posibility to hold even bigger events. Hopefully at least another pan am games

The Super Bowl i believe will start a MAJOR population explosion in the Indianapolis area because of all the business people and CEOS coming to the city. I just have a feeling well become one if not the fastest growing region in the USA after the Super Bowl. Businesses will see our city and want to expand in it.

Well that is probably over wishful thinking. Granted a good showing by the city will definitely cause an immediate interest in the city and the area but not a population explosion. It will be up to the mayor and the governor to showcase what the state can do for them in terms of savings and logistics. The Super Bowl doesn't promise anything but opportunity. It's up to the city to capitalize on it.

as long as we dont screw up like Dallas (The Ticket Fiesco) I dont see a reason why Indy couldnt host the Super Bowl again
