Welcome to Indianapolis! Wherever you came from, Indy is......Indy. Like every other city in America, it has its pros and cons, and good areas and bad areas. First of all, its best to live OUTSIDE the 465 beltway, unless you live north of about 71st street. The far north, far south and far west sides are good, but AVOID ALL OF THE EAST SIDE. Nothing but grime and grit. Affordable homes abound everywhere. Carmel, Fishers, Zionsville and maybe Noblesville (all in Hamilton County) are the most expensive suburbs but everything else--Greenwood, Avon, Brownsburg, Plainfield, Westfield, and Franklin--are very affordable. All Indy suburbs are great places to raise a family with good schools and clean and safe neighborhoods. Dont send children to IPS (Indianapolis Public Schools). They are the worst in the state and among the worst in the country. The township districts in Marion County are highly superior. Of course, Indianapolis-Marion County has its share of private/parochial schools too. For me, the A #1 place I would live in the Indianapolis area is Carmel, with Fishers in a close 2nd. Hope this helps and I hope you like it. And welcome to Indy!!

Indiana and Indianapolis have extremely few Indians--native Americans. Good luck with that one.

Warning to anybody even considering moving to Indiana...dont do it!...Ive lived all over the United States and Indiana is easily the most poorly run incompetent state ive ever spent time in, It's Denver Colorado back in 1983 before Denver became the world class city it is today. This is what Indiana has going for it... LOW RENT & The Colts...THATS IT!...and dont let anyone tell you differently.
you always hear people on these threads talking about hooser friendliness well people here are no more friendly than people in Nebraska, Texas, Utah or any other city ive lived and worked in.
Trying to collect unemployment in this state is ridiculous, ive never seen anything like it, have never had a problem in any other state collecting unemployment when work slows down, even if i had left the state looking for work, they still payed until work was found even if out of state. NOT INDIANA you would never be able to collect indiana unemployment if you were out of state...Its hard enough to collect living here...WHY?...they want to keep your money, they want to make people jump through as many hoops as possible with the hope you will throw your hands up and say forget it, then they can keep the money to do more stupid thing in the state like build a stadium.
So do yourself a favor, there are many young up and coming places like Oklahoma city, Albuquerque, Minneapolis, Denver, Austin, Salt lake city...any of these places offers so much more for you and your family. It wont surprise me if they even flag this posting...try this look at the # of postings on threads about living in Minneapolis or Denver then look at Indianapolis...even with low rent and cheap housing people arent moving to Indianapolis...they are wise...

While I certainly sympathize with your employment troubles, I'd say that, if this is true, it's a sign of a competently managed government. Any state that continues to pay unemployment to people even after they have left the state is setting themselves up for serious trouble. What would California do right now if it had to pay out all the people leaving the state b/c of no jobs? The State would be rated at junk bond status (if it isn't already).

Ummm....Indianapolis area is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country right now, and one of the only major cities in America with a somewhat stable economy. Indy was rated in the top 10 cities for jobs and in the top 10 cities for new college grads. Hamilton County was rated the best in the country for raising a family, and Fishers was independently rated in the top 10 best towns to live in.
Also, Indy has a lot more going on than just the Colts, though they are a blast...just because you never took the time to explore and try some of the things the city has to offer doesn't mean those things don't exist.
Sorry about your sour grapes but it isn't Indy's fault. If you like Denver so much, live there. Don't forget your snow shovel...

Evidently youve never lived in Arizona. It ranks dead last--50th--in public education in ACT/SAT scores, spending per pupil and graduation rates.
Social services are meager as well. Arizona ranks 49th in unemployment benfits, hardly enough to pay the rent. And dont even get me started on the cost of living compared to jobs. Its insane.
And if you think Indiana is run poorly and is incompetent, try Arizona. It has the HIGHEST budget deficit in the country, as state policymakers run this state into the ground and close everything and any kind of social service available. Not too mention they wunna raise your taxes. Trust me, Indiana aint bad at all. Oklahoma City, 'young, up and coming?? What a joke. You dont know half of what you are talking about.

Why should a person collect Indiana unemployment if they are in another state? That is gorss and makes no sense! Not to mention a waste of state resources. Would you want to pay for your neighbor's expenses? I didnt think so. Talk about entitlement.......

Just because you didnt bother to do your research or get out and see what great things Indy has to offer, doesnt mean Indy has 'nothing'. Therefore, your opinion doesnt amount to a hill 'o beans. I've lived in 3 other cities besides Indy--Detroit, Washington DC and Phoenix--and Indy is the best place I've lived. Washington DC is nice to visit but too expensive too live, too 'busy' and too much East Coast snootyness. Dont need to say much about Detroit; that speaks for itself. And I HATE Pheonix with the oppressive heat, illegals, crime, pollution and no jobs. Indy's great. Please get out more.
