Moving to Indianapolis - Please help.
Hello...
My husband and I are moving to Indianapolis and it is a completely NEW city for us... I mean, we do not have any relatives there and we have absolutely no idea of which area is good and safe (crime-free)... When I started doing an apartment search, it is giving me 100's of places and I do not know which could be a better place to live in... We would prefer living around zip code 46278...
Could someone pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee help???? Any suggestions would be appreciated.......
Thanks in advance!!!

Have you thought about the suburbs? It may be easier on you since you are new to the area.

Here is a lot of info on that zip code
http://www.city-data.com/zips/46278.html
But help us help you. There are many on here who enjoy helping, but you really haven't given much to go on.
Do you have kids, what type of area do you enjoy living in, urban area, quiet suburb, busy suburb. Where will you be working, how long of a commute are you willing to have.
I want to help, but I need more info. If you aren;t too sure what we need, just start telling us stuff and we will help

If this is the Castleton area of Indy, I lived there for six (6) months. It's a really nice area. I can't remember the zip code.

46278 is mostly but not all within the boundaries of I895, I65 and I465. There are some (Traders Point Creamery) some expensive housing, some older stock. Lots of industial warehouses and business traffic around I465. Not too many subdivisions and until recently no shopping except to drive to the busy Michigan and 86th corner with Walmart and Sams Club. Now there are a few more at I465 and 86th but limited. Dont know about schools but the area is sparse. Michigan Road will be the most used shopping area.
Fairly easy access to downtown once you get on I65/465.
Easy access to airport.
I would suspect anything with land would be expensive here because of the proximity to town. But you could find something with a more rural feel. Not sure about the streets during winter (plowing).

Thank you all for replying!!!!
N m sorry if I had not provided enuf information... My husband n I are moving from Missouri... He has a job near the zip code 46278 (pardon me for not knowing all the areas out there as of now)... We are just two of us, no kids.. We r looking for sum good apartments to rent...
We r Indians, so we r wondering if we get 2 stay in a place where there r quite a few Indians around... Safety is our first preference, we r more worried coz we dunno which places over there r safe/crime free etc... We r also wondering if we cud stay at sum place which is not 2 far from his office, but in case we dont get such a place, we dont mind travelling a bit (in case there r not any local commutation available, we r okay coz we can travel via our car)...
We r social ppl... So closeness to malls, restaurants, etc. would also be a plus, but its definitely not the important most criteria... All in all, descent and safe locality is our preference n we r very confused as to what we shud be doing since indianapolis is a completely new city for us, we do not have any friends/relatives there...
Thank u alll a tonnnnn for helping us out... Shall wait for your responses...
Rgds,
Dimple...

If by Indian you mean the country India, the Indian Community Center is just south of there and there are grocery, clothing, restaurants (both meat and vegetarian) very close. Big ethnic community here. Welcome.
INDIA ASSOCIATION OF INDIANAPOLIS is the local India organization and should provide most of the info you need. It is a big group. They should be able to give you info on apartments that meet your needs and also help you get to know Indianapolis. Finding community is often harder than finding housing. Dont worry about housing. There is a lot.

Hello...I am also of Indian origin, and went to high school in Indianapolis. 46278 is on the NW side of town, in Pike Township. My parents used to live there. I would characterize this area, and the school system, as being "in transition", and therefore would not recommend it. Even if you don't have children, resale will be tough.
You are much better off looking in Carmel, which is on the north side, and not too far a commute from the 46278 zip code. My parents live there, and there are tons of Indians in the area. Also, great shopping, lots of housing choices, and just a lot of growth.
