I would look at Fall Creek Place. It's a nice redeveloped neighborhood that is very close to downtown. You could also consider a condo downtown depending on how much space you want and your budget.

119 more Asian students will not make or break or even come close to proving one is better over the other. 387 Asian Students for Carmel vs. 268 Asian student for PM and Southport combined which is still 43 students less than Carmel.

I'm not arguing that one is better than the other. The poster stated that there are far more Asians living on the south side than in Carmel. I merely refuted that with facts.

Ah, you would have to do population by zip code and/or census tracts to prove that wrong. How many Asian kids in a high school isn't definitive as people may not have children, grown children, children not yet in high school, children in private schools, etc. Not saying Carmel has more Asians but population numbers between the 3 townships completely on the south side + the zip codes of other townships(Center, Warren, Wayne) whose boundaries are considered south according to the city grid tends to lean toward more Asians being south side than Carmel due to population but again, one would have to go in zip by zip to really figure that out and who's going to do that?

Thank you all. It appears from the replies that we should concentrate on these locations: southside of Carmel, southside Indy and Meridian-Kesseler.

Regarding MK and Butler-Tarkington- Is all of it pretty safe? Or are there specific areas to avoid? Could anyone point out possibly a square boundary where they would feel comfortable walking? That would help us look in that general area.

We had heard about South Carmel subdivisions being better commutes, and drove on a weekend day while we were there, till the Starbucks on Michigan near 106th st (? I think) and it took 25 min. Have not driven to East Carmel. We will do the drive a couple of times during rush hour on weekends, if we think thats where we want to live. What is "rush hour" for these neighborhoods on a typical weekday?
Also, Are there any neighbourhoods in Carmel, where you could walk, say to pick up a few groceries, or go to the public library?

We had not thought about Southside Indy and will look into the areas mentioned by posters above. Thank you. The commute into downtown looks to be short, and there seem to be a bunch of neighborhoods we need to investigate.

I believe it to be. Just keep in mind that those neighborhoods lie within the boundaries of Indianapolis Public Schools, so you may wish to budget for private schools.

In Carmel, rush hour is from about 6:45 to 9:00 in the Morning and 4:00 to 6ish in the afternoon. The only walkable area in Carmel is Downtown/Arts and Design District and there isn't even a grocery store there. I assume there will probably be a small grocery in the future with all of the development, but again that's just an assumption. There are a good amount of restaurants, art galleries, and the Carmel library though.

It wouldn't seem to terrible to get to the Kroger just north of Carmel Drive via bike, though. No?

With a bike it'd be fine, but I've walked it before and carrying groceries that far just sucks.

Coming from the East coast and having grown up in Washington DC metro area, the "north side rush hour traffic" is NOTHING to me!!! It's not bad at all! Also, in my opinion, there is not a significant difference between southern Carmel vs. Northern Carmel/Westfield. It takes me literally 10-15 minutes to get from 151st down to the intersection of 465/96th street and Meridian. I take Spring Mill road south rather than Meridian though and it's not bad at all. I'd consider Westfield/Noblesville areas as well. I've been commuting from 151st down to south of downtown (Harding and 465 on southside) for many years, it takes me 40-45 minutes door to door, not bad at all. The key is to leave before 7 AM in the morning and leave downtown by 4 PM in the afternoon.... Just my $0.02 worth.
