For the Bold: I think my original post still stands. If they started building the "World Class" city of Indy 20-30 years ago, it won't reach "2011 World Class" status, ammenities, business and transportation until 2061, and by then it will be outdated.

For the Underlined: No, it's not criminal. I have my own plans, hopes and desires for the city. But I am realistic. Indianapolis does not have the desire, money, or energy to even make an attempt at becoming "World Class".

If Indianapolis said it was going to give every street a walkable sidwealk in Marion County, QUINTUPLE the number of busses running and their routes, AND lay 150 miles of track for light rail, ALL IN THE NEXT 10 years, then I would take "building a world class city" seriously.

Until then, the leaders of Indy can think putting a line between downtown and the airport will be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but in reality it is extremely telling of the leadership of the city, in my opinion.

Is Indianapolis world class, IMO no but then again world class is highly subjective. Does the city have world class things, of course, Children's Museum, Lucas Oil, Conseco, Weir-Cooke terminal, Cultural Trail, events in the Indianapolis 500, mini-marathon, tradition in the Monument, American Legion Mall, Crown Hill, etc. It's now a matter of tying these things together. It also has a lot of things that fly completely under the radar like Connor Prairie, IMA, WRSP, NCAA Hall of Champions, etc.

Unfortunately, the biggest tie in just happens to be transportation infrastructure. A line from the airport into downtown would do wonders. IndyGo sucks, they even admit that on their web site but even downtown you have the Red Line circulator which is free. You have the people mover between the hospitals with a stop at IUPUI which involved no tax dollars and free for public use, not just IU Health employees. The city could use BRT very successfully and cheaper per mile than rail and extend the red line out to the zoo.

IUPUI is growing by leaps and bounds. I realize lifelong Indianapolis residents only see it as a commuter college because that's what it has been for decades, but now IUPUI houses the nations second largest Med School, tied to the nations second largest hospital network (according to them anyway), HCA based in Nashville is #1 by a long shot along with top tier research. Add Law, Dental, Business and it's transformed itself from just a commuter college to a major player of course dependent on which side (IU or PU) you fall on with regards to business/health or Science. That's understandable as when I first arrived to the city, it was nothing but a commuter college. It was just OOOeeyyPuuiii. IU and PU put a lot of resources into transforming the campus and residents should actually take the time to notice how it went from nothing to literally a top notch urban campus.

I think I've mentioned this before but Indianapolis residents tend to really not appreciate what they have. Quick to b%$R$ about everything and god forbid mention so much as a 1 cent tax on something and it's pandemonium. Does the city still have work to do; of course, immediate neighborhoods outside of downtown needs addressing, crime is higher now than when I first arrived, not enough to scare me but it's higher than it should be and public school issue needs to be tackled; which of course is every major US city in this nation. Always thought it was a big mistake to merge the city but leave the school districts separated. I think one of the reasons is that residents don't really know what's here. You pick your side of town and you stay there. North siders, don't travel to the south side unless passing thru, south siders don't go north, east siders don't go west and you all get my drift.

In the end the difference is swagger. To be a champion you have to have that swag and a lot of residents just don't have that in Indianapolis.

Unigov wouldn't have passed had it included the merger of the township districts into IPS.

No, no, no. It most certainly was. I was just making sure, because... well... it's the internet. You never know.

Piccadilly Circus and Times Square don't have anything on Monument Circle. Fashion Mall > Rodeo Drive. Get real.
