Default Downtown living

Relocating from Toledo, oh to work in downtown Indianapolis. Is it affordable/ reasonable to live downtown?

Also, can I call it Indy or is that too lazy- indianapolis ?

Indy is very much used as much as the term Indianapolis.
Just like calling gas and gasoline.
Indianapolis is the most affordable Major City in America. Lowest cost of living index combined with low taxes. Plus the nations most affordable real estate market and being within a days drive to 75% of the US population.
Also were the First Northern City to be put on the Super Bowl host rotation list.
I think youll love Indy especially compared to Toledo since were the fastest growing region in the midwest and host to many major sporting events Indy 500 is the worlds largest sporting event held every memorial day.

I've lived downtown for a couple of years. It's pretty affordable, especially if you work downtown and don't have to drive to where you work.

and it is getting better. At least three apartment complexes (buildings) going up which will bring more people downtown and therefore more vibrancy. I have noted that condos in reasonable price ranges have just started selling also.

we have one huge building being converted to mixed income apartments with huge new windows. should be exciting. it is at 1010 North Central,THE WHITSETT GROUP » COMMUNITIES. another "affordable" building is going up on Mass Ave, (trailside on Mass ave is the name) and I think it is being done by riley development group. and I cannot forget the four story buildings, 329 apartments, going in just a short short walk south next to Lilly. I think the buckingham group is doing them.

If you come before they are done, a short term rental should allow you to wait to get a new and convenient apartment downtown. No idea of rents but with so many going in, there will be some leeway.

forgot to add, there is the condo building, Maxwell, that was converted to apartments during the housing downturn. It is in a great location downtown.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's going to be a quick move. My new employer would like me to begin work on April 2.

I'll be coming into town next week to search out accommodations. I'd like to rent first and see how I adjust to the area. I'm 29 so I still like to get out and enjoy when I'm not working. Just want to be an area that is safe and semi-close to work.

Looking forward to Indy!

Any other recommendations? I might be getting a job in Indianapolis that requires me to move ASAP. I'm in Manhattan right now, so I'd prefer downtown Indianapolis...close to bars (so I can stumble home drunk and not have to drive), social scene, farmer's markets, fun stuff in general. What are the cooler, more laid back neighborhoods?

P.S., I know NOTHING about this area...totally ignorant, sorry!

One great piece of advice i will give to you is don't expect Indy or any city to be NYC so come with an open mind and youll have a good time.
Downtown is where all the action is for the city. Mass Ave is the artsy corridor in downtown with local shops etc. Fountain Square is also up and coming with arts and shops and resturants. Laid back neighborhoods would basically be any of the suburbs of Indy. Indianapolis also has a city market in downtown that could suit your needs for a farmers market

Thanks! I'm from Burlington, VT so it's not like I'm such an urbanite. I'll look up Mass Ave! I'll probably avoid the suburbs. I realize I might sound snobby saying this, but when I said "laid back" I meant the laid-back attitude of Park Slope in Brooklyn, or the West Side neighborhoods in Manhattan. You're right, though, no place on earth is like NYC, and I can't duplicate the neighborhoods I love here. I'm going to miss it so much, BUT I'm not going to miss having a cramped apartment or ****ty roommates or cockroaches (yes, it's true). I was looking up the prices and I just realized that I could have an AWESOME luxury apartment in a nice building for way, way, way less than what I'm paying now. And I can have my car (mine's back in VT)! After reading about Indianapolis, I feel like I can spread myself out more there.

Any other advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

P.S., Sorry if it seems like I have a snobby attitude...New York didn't do that to me, I was like that already, haha.

Indianapolis has the nations most affordable housing market and the cost of living is half that of New York City. As i like to say the Dollar goes farther in Indy. Also youll find the apartment options as you mentioned very good. The Central Canal in downtown is nice to walk down especially during warm weather like this. I would also recommend visiting the Monuments when you move here cause Indianapolis is 2nd only to Washington D.C for war monuments within the city. Also i agree with that youll be able to have more freedom and spread out more in Indy.
Welcome to Indianapolis
