Default Exploring Indianapolis

I am exploring a move to Indianapolis. It won't be for a couple of years, but looking for information about neighborhoods. I love older historic houses. Primarily do not want newer areas - like the old front porches and sidewalks, etc. Also, looking for an area that is walkable. Although I do plan to keep my truck, I would like an area that is walkable or at least use primarily my electric scooter. Another dream would be enough yard for a good size garden.

Any ideas of areas (zip codes if possible as they are easier to search on houses for sale listings). Kinda anything that will help someone that has no idea about specifics would be able to figure out.

Good place to have for research is MIBOR which is the public multiple listing site. Huge amount of information.

It gives a map and you can spend time looking at townships within Indy and then focus on specific areas. I have spent many a happy hour looking over listings.

Default Older Homes with Walkability

My favorite two areas that meet these criteria are Lockerbie (46202 - downtown area) and Meridian Kessler (46260, 46205, 46220, 46208 -10 to 15 minutes north of downtown). Note that these zip codes include more than these specific neighborhoods, but it will give you an idea of where to look.

You didn't mention your budget though, or what size house you are looking at - an updated single family home in Lockerbie could cost $500K or more. Lockerbie is a lovely tree filled area just outside of the center of downtown. It's close enough to walk to pretty much everything downtown has to offer.

My husband and I live in Meridian Kessler. We love the character of the homes and the fact that we can walk to several restaurants, shops, dry cleaners, flower shops, Fresh Market, gardening centers, churches, etc. Home prices vary greatly - you can get a smaller home that hasn't been remodeled for around $125K and up or you can go big and live in a huge home on one of the major streets and spend upwards of a million dollars.
