Thinking of making a short trip to the city next month, to visit an old friend. She lives in the Cumberland area and says that there are several hotels in the E. 21st/N. Shadeland area -- but that doesn't look like a very appealing area (online, at least).

Does anyone have any hotel or neighborhood recommendations that would keep me fairly close to where she lives but that would be a bit nicer?

Thanks!

I would avoid the hotels at 21st and Shadeland.

There are a couple of hotels in Greenfield that are nice, and reasonably priced. It would be about a 15 minute drive to Cumberland. Would that be close enough?

Greenfield is east of Cumberland, and is a nice, safe small town.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking about 21st/Shadeland, but I haven't lived in the city in almost 30 years, so I'm not familiar with the different neighborhoods anymore.

I don't need to stay right next door to her, just within a short drive, so 15 minutes is fine. We'll be spending at least some time downtown, so easy access there will be important -- but I'm guessing that won't be a problem.

I'll look at Greenfield -- thanks!

There is a Marriott in the vicinity of 21st and Shadeland that was the designated hotel for West Virginia basketball and fans during the Final 4 a couple years ago. It can't be THAT bad.

Thanks, I looked up that Marriott and rooms there are $150+/night which, unfortunately, is beyond my budget for this trip. Would you recommend any of the other hotels in the vicinity?

I stayed at that hotel several years ago and it wasn't great then.

No way is a hotel room off of 21st and Shadeland 150 a night. Outside of the paraplegic trials, nothing is going on that would warrant that high of a price for a not so great part of town. You can stay downtown for cheaper. Odds are they are trying to hustle.

It's a smidge east of Shadeland (7202 E. 21st) and what can I say? For the dates I'd be travelling, it's $150 on Orbitz, $160 on Hotels.com, and $190 on the Marriott website.

They recently remodeled that hotel.

There is a La Quinta off of 21st next to the Marriot that gets average to above average reviews on Trip Advisor.
