Carmel does have very very exclusive neighborhoods...but one of the reasons it was also chosen is because there are nice areas of the city for more middle-class families. May not be the newest homes, but still very decent! I like Carmel because you do not have to sped a fortune (unless you want) to live in an area with great amenities, great schools, and very safe.

I'm one who lives elsewhere, who is actually not a Carmel hater.

Money is not an issue and we could very much afford to live in Carmel, but we love being near downtown. There is no way I would give up what Indy has to offer for what Carmel has to offer.

It's as simple as that.

I think both cities can coexist peacefully.

Oh, and we do have children.

Carmel really has some places that aren't too costly. For $175K, you should be able to find something. We are looking, but don't really have any firm plans till next year. I'm avoiding vinyl and HOAs, so we are aiming for those stone/brick homes built in the 60s-80s in the older parts of Carmel (or Home Place, which really isn't part of Carmel I guess). We don't make a lot of money, but with no kids, it is definitely easier financially. I've even found two lots and may build. I would love an all stone or brick home with more modern furnishings: Three car garage and walk-in master closet.

Carmel's been showing up on the list for the past few years, but was the winner this year.
It wasn't voted as the "Best Place To Live In America". It was voted "Best Small City."
