Like everyone said, you can't go wrong with either school. Athletically, if you are interested in AAU, it doesn't matter what school you go to. Traveling teams like that recruit from all over, it's a matter of who you knows and how much you want to spend. For High School programs, you can't beat Carmel. The school has won over 80 State Championships in various sports. With that being said, the size of the school is a big deal. Your son or daughter will be competing with about 4000 other children for the 5 starting spots on a basketball team. In Zionsville, you'll be competing against less than 2000 students. By the number alone, their chance of making the team already increases by 50%....

Hi Everyone,
We STILL havent decided on Carmel or Zionsville...we're letting the kids finish the school year here in WI, but we have to decide quickly in order to register the kids for school...so we've looked at parochial schools in Carmel and Fishers and have gone back and forth with the sports opportunities and we keep coming back to zionsville! We have just heard so little negative about zionsville and it seems wonderful - i think my issue is i just do not want to move
ive been reading posts here and on IndyStar and again, nothing but positive comments about zionsville...i just want a nice, safe community that will allow our kids the same oppts they have here (and more) and have them assimilate quickly and thrive.
I'm rambling Does anyone know of the best communities to live in in Zionsville? i really like stonegate, but NO yards and that is just killing me.
Thanks for listening!!!

Im from Upper Michigan and will be relocating to Indy this summer. We will likely settle in one of the areas discussed earlier in the thread. Ive read a little about the Fishers forum but see nothing about youth Hockey. I have a 3 year old son who learned to skate this year and im hoping to get him interested in the sport. Any info would be appreciated and thanks for all the other info so far

Fishers has a huge ice hockey arena called The Fishers Forum. I had a neighbor whose son is a top notch player in his age group. Try looking for Central States Developmental Hockey League.

I'm from rural Michigan (which I still consider home) but have lived in the Indianapolis area 21 years, the last 14 in Zionsville. Zionsville really is that wonderful; I wouldn't want to live in any area in Indiana. I also work in law enforcement/emergency services within Indy and comparably, you just can't beat Zionsville for raising kids in a safe and quiet community. I would find it hard to leave Michigan or Wisconsin today; so I sympathize with you there. Zionsville is a wonderful substitute for me, being a north lover.
My parents do a lot of traveling, Michigan snowbirds, and they are always surprised by the number of people all over the country that they meet and know Zionsville's great reputation.
I personally, have stayed in Zionsville because of the school district. I can't say enough about the schools here.
That said, what I like about Stonegate (although I don't live there, I live in the old village- my "MainStreet" handle is taken from Main Street Zionsville) is that Stonegate, despite the small yards, will have enough amenities right there, and is the type of community that the kids can ride bikes and you don't have to worry about them getting run over. There will be plenty of areas close by for children, the soccer fields, Boys & Girls Club are all right there. I like that the elementary school is right there too.
Sure you could find other communities with yard only a bit larger, but those other area homes don't have the quality and aesthetic characteristics that Stonegate has. I don't know what your price range is, but if you can afford Stonegate, you may want to take a look at "The Willows." Huge lots, stunning homes; the only downside is that it is east of 421/Michigan Rd and I don't like that road very much; too much semi-traffic flying through. The upside is that it is a hop skip and jump to the village and the whole Carmel-Clay area for shopping and West Clay for the best dentist in the state (IMO-Indy Dental Group).
I love discussing Zionsville and reading about what others think of Zionsville that do not live here. One thing I will always remember reading was a conversation between some ladies from Fishers & Carmel who thought that people from Zionsville "kept to themselves." Then one pointed out that she felt that Zionsville residents kept to themselves because they loved their hometown so much they couldn't wait to get home and found it hard to leave. I have to agree with that. After a long day in the city, I race home to Zionsville and never look back. It is really hard for me to leave the village on my days off.
A co-worker of mine, a native Hoosier and Indianapolis resident, finally made it up to Zionsville and LOVED it. When we were talking about her "tour" I told her that I've do a lot of traveling, Denver, Gulf Shores, Michigan, and I can sum up living in Zionsville to being on vacation 365 days a year. I love it that much (although look forward to retiring in northern Michigan.)
It's a unique community and no matter where you decide to live within it, there are enough positive things to always out way any negative, like small yards.
I am all about Zionsville, my teen is a waitress at a restaurant here on weekends and a cashier at the grocery after school; I couldn't give her a farm to grow up on like I did, but Zionsville provided a fantastic hometown for her. I am very proud of that.
I do have a wish list though...years ago there was a grocery on Main Street that closed and the space became an antique mall. Well now the antique mall is closing and there is talk of an organic grocery taking that space back. When I can again walk down to the grocery to get some romaine or a gallon of milk again, I'll have died and gone to heaven, lol.
So if you end up moving here, great welcomes in advance.
Just so happens this was my 1000 post...I'm glad it an ode to Zionsville!

Thank you so much Main Street - you are always posting such thorough and knowledgeable responses!!
The way you feel about Zionsville is exactly how i felt/feel about the small east coast town i grew up in. Was there most of my single life then started moving for career, then husbands career, then husbands career again, and now again - ive frankly had enough moving and want to settle down once and for all and assure our kids that we are finally HOME.
Zionsville reminds me much of the town i grew up in - very quaint without the 'hickness' - people are SO nice, and the natives rave about it. I love that.
I also love that the schools are so well-regarded since my kids have been in parochial school their whole elementary career and i am struggling with the thought of putting them in public schools (though not surprisingly - they are ALL for it!!) There's also a wonderful preschool there - Interactive Academy - which i have heard great things about.
We really liked Stonegate from the get-go - though the prices are higher than we wanted to pay - it seems you do get a lot of bang for the buck if you will. The schools, the village atmosphere but on a smaller scale than the Village of West Clay (which i think is just TOO huge), the proximity (as you mention) to almost everything we would need, the safety factor for the kids, etc, etc, etc.
I almost signed the kids up at parochial school in Fishers until i realized how far west of zionsville it is (and read that same post you mentioned as well!). We will be coming down the end of March to look at houses AGAIN - we have to make a decision soon as this limbo is just very difficult!!
Thanks again so much!

Hi michid918,
We currently live in Kansas City and will be relocating to Zionsville this summer for my husband's job. Our other choice was Madison, Wisconsin (we lived there for 9 years, college and beyond) we really wanted to go there, but the job was better in Indy. This will be my 4th big move since college. We have young children and we are considering public schools in Zionsville. I toured Eagle Elementary and really liked it. One unique thing about Eagle is that they have a science teacher who teaches science for one of their specials. They have a large wooded area behind the school with trails and a pond. I'm also looking for a preschool and was wondering if you had more info on the Interactive Academy that you mentioned. Where in Wisconsin do you live? We are so sad we had to turn down the job offer in Madison, wisconsin is a great state! I am hoping that Zionsville will be a nice community to raise our children. Good luck with all your moving plans! JK5shay

You will like zionsville just fine. It's not like Madison, please keep that in mind. I find that people who relo to Indiana expecting it to be someplace else, end up angry and frustrated ...
Zionsville has a nationally ranked public school system and is a very nice community in and of itself and very desireable. You will be close enough to all the amenities that Indy has to offer (Children's Museum being the big one) and if you need big city, Chicago is easily had as well.
I wish your family a stress free move! Is there such a thing???
Welcome.
