I don't know too much about Indianapolis...never been then.
I assume since it's a large city, then crime is obviously a problem...but are there really nice, clean low crime neighborhoods in the 155k price range just outside the major city? Maybe the outskirts? I want to stay real close to the city to avoid any...hrm...tornadoes that might freakishly attack at random...but not live inside the downtown area.

You're freaking out a bit too much about the tornado issue. A tornado ripped through Indy a couple years ago right after the 500 .... friends on the east side lost their roof.

I've lived here almost 40 years (25 miles north of downtown center) and have never seen/heard/been affected by a tornado. You really shouldn't base living decisions solely on that fear.

Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers, and Browsnburg are some of the fastest growing suburbs (boomburbs) in the country and the first two offer easy passage downtown.

Brownsburg has excellent schools; homes are not quite as high-priced as in the northern suburbs, however, there is a huge population explosion going on right now, and a fair amount of construction just about everywhere in town. It is safe enough that I feel comfortable walking alone, even at night.

Westfield is another great area... the $155k is probably most likely in Fishers (larger overall area, and price range).
