New registration $146.05 = Excise tax $125.00 & Reg. Passenger car fee $21.05

Now what is a Reg. passenger car fee I've never noticed this before? Over a grand on a used vehicle? I think the man got his plus a woman and 3 children!
To be fair, $840 of that is sales tax. That has nothing to do with car tags.

This has nothing to do with Pence!! I moved here in 1991. It was like this when I got here!! I just wanna know WHY????

When I asked the BMV many many years ago, they told me it was because it kept our
Indiana Income taxes lower?

True but what is the Reg. passenger car fee and what is it used towards?

I believe I explained why.

We have relatively low property taxes. Like I said, The Man will always get his.

The Reg fee is Registration. Every state has that.

You always have to pay sales tax, on a new or used car. A lot of dealers choose to defer the tax and let you pay it at the BMV, Indiana sales tax is the same as almost all the other state taxes, nothing special here.

I guess that's the price to be paid for living in the beautiful state of Indiana. Here in Montana we may have high property tax but we have no sales tax. We do have an option of buying a lifetime registration that is not pricey but the car has to be of a certain age to qualify.
Like the other posters say, they will get their money one way or another.

Remember the song Taxman by the Beatles ? It's as "timeless" as the song "Trouble Coming Everyday" from Frank Zappa's "Freakout" album by the Mothers Of Invention.

It really is outrageous.

Our registration/tax bill is due on 5/5 and for our two vehicles and our RV (all newer), we owe $1,300.

I love Indiana.

This is one of the reasons, though, that when we retire, we will be moving to another state with lower taxes. No, they all don't "get you somewhere else."

For a state run by "fiscal conservatives" who claim to love "lowering taxes," we sure seem to get hit with more than our fair share.
