Hi, I'm moving to Indianapolis in a month or so and I am trying to decide where to live. I am 29, relativly single and would like to be near some sort of nightlife. I love live music, especially jazz. I will be working on the south west side of the city, kind of near the airport.

Can anyone suggest an aparment community that is nice? Would driving from the north side of the ciity be an insane commute? What is downtown like?

I would appreciate any suggestions. I will be traveling there in a few weeks to look for an apartment and I am trying to refine my search.

Will that be a cruddy commute? It's pretty hellish driving through Hartford, CT during rush hour. Is it similar there?

I'm still stuck on "relatively single".

Yes, you're in for a longish commute if you live in BR and work on the southwest side, but that beats actually living on the southwest side. Downtown can be pricey, but if you check with Van Rooy or Stallard, they have some affordable, if not swanky, apartments in the downtown area. If you live downtown, at least you'll be about halfway between where you work and where you play (BR).

When I lived in Indianapolis, I lived in Waterstone Luxury Apartments on the West Side, right outside the loop off 38th street (not the bad part of 38th street, which is everything INSIDE the loop).

15-minute drive to Broad Ripple and downtown, 2-minute drive to Rick's Boatyard Cafe on Eagle Creek Resevior (great happy hours in the summer and lots of after work eye candy with good food, drinks, and jazz). Right next door to Marsh and Target. Located right next to I-465; 50-minute drive south to Bloomington, 50-minute drive north to West Lafayette. Management was quick and responsive to calls. Only downside is the gates broke from time to time, and the apartment complex across the street (Idlewood) has a different group of renters in it (I never had any problems though). Overall, I loved living there. Rent was $665 for a one-bedroom; this was in '05.

Whatever you do, do NOT rent from Stallard & Associates. STALLARD & ASSOCIATES IS THE WORST LANDLORD I'VE EVER HAD. IF AND WHEN THEY REPAIR SOMETHING, THEY DO IT AS CHEAPLY AS POSSIBLE IF AT ALL. IF YOU CALL FOR EMERGENCY MAINTENANCE AFTER HOURS, THEY DO EVERYTHING WITHIN THEIR POWER TO DEEM IT A NONE EMERGENCY SO THEY CAN CHARGE YOU A $50 TRIP CHARGE plus $40/HR FOR "FALSE MAINTENANCE REQUESTS"! They are schiesty!
