What are some music venues, preferably smaller and cheaper ones, where a person can hear rock, metal or punk styles of music?

They don't have to be national bands or anything, I am looking more for smaller level bands in a more intimate setting with a low cover charge. Does anyone have any ideas where I can find that?

I live on the east side, so preferably things closer to the east side if possible. But if something great is on the west side I'd go to that too.

First place that comes to mind is the Melody Inn on Illinois St., just north of 38th.

The Historic Melody Inn Tavern of Indianapolis

There is a place that calls itself Hoosier Dome on Prospect St in Fountain Square (closer to State Ave). You might find it of interest. Sometimes Radio Radio in Fountain Square has rock shows.

Though, as mentioned already, Melody Inn Melody Inn Melody Inn.

Does The Emerson still have live bands? I recall that place was always a punk and metal hangout.

I can't give you points on this one... later though.

Eastside of Indy? Of course the Emerson!

It holds 200 to *maybe* 400 people.

It's a nice place for a rock show. Maybe even meet band members out in the alley while they are loading up? (I did, and got a tour through the theater after the show let out, and autographs)

Word of advice though: Do not park in the McDonald's parking lot across the street. They will tow. That's not from personal experience, but I have witnessed it before.

Probably more north than east but but you might check out Birdy's at 71st and Keystone. Great music venue.
