Hi everyone. I'm planning on moving to Indianapolis to complete an internship at IUPUI starting at the end of next July, and by then I will have just turned 21. I'm from Ireland and have lived there all my life in a small town. Basically I just want to get an idea as to what the city is like. What is the nightlife like? As far as adapting to a big city is concerned I've heard that it isn't really that big or difficult to navigate, but I suspect this might generally be coming from people used to cities like New York, LA etc. Do you guys think it is a good place in general for a young person to live? As far as area is concerned i'll be living as close as possible to the university. How affordable Is it to live in Indy? I'll be on quite a limited budget. Also, can anybody tell me about IUPUI, such as availability / quality of sporting facilities such as gyms etc? I already know the academic side of the area i'll be working in is excellent so have no concerns or questions about that.
Thnaks in advance for any advice or info

On the IUPUI campus is a fabulous gym, National Institute of Fitness and Sport, NIFS. They have a good website and you can see pictures. You might qualify for the student membership which is $25 a month and includes a parking pass so you can get to it easily. We go there and it is very well run.

They have classes as early as 6am and later in the evening so if you want to avoid traffic, it helps.

We have professional basketball, football and a minor league team for baseball right downtown. I think there is a soccer start up.

Housing is your biggest issue. Van Rooy has a lot of properties. Be wary of Zender.

Don't confuse the night life here with the night life in New York and LA. BR, Mass Ave, Fountain Square are areas the locals will howl about with endless adulation. You may be sorely disappointed.

Timmy, have you ever heard anyone over the age of 21 say a trip to Broad Ripple Ave is equal to a trip to lower Manhattan or Rodeo Drive? OP was not even asking if that were the case.

It won't be anything as compact and old like Dublin or Belfast. Indy is more spacious and newer. It's more in the mid sized city category. Large in this country would be NY, LA, Chicago etc.. When it comes to public transportation there are no street trams here or as many frequent buses to hop on should you want to go outside of downtown.

Hey moderators, is there any chance we can get rid of this problem? This is simply the polar opposite of BRG with the same level of education.

I'm sorry you have issues with people that have different opinions than yours

surely it can't be that bad, being a capital city?

anyway, thanks for the replies so far! i wouldn't be going over to party excessively or anything because i'm pretty sure i wont have the time, but still, nightlife is one of the aspects i'm curious about in relation to living in Indianapolis
