I make the trip regularly from Indy to NYC/CT.
There are no tunnels once you get outside of NYC. You want to take I 80 W thru Pennslvania, that will shoot u to Akron - go south to Columbus - take the bypass around columbus and shoot straight to indy on I70 W.
Very easy, no tunnels, major highways. And yes I have driven a uhaul via it.
I didn't take tunnels in NYC -went across the George Washington. If tunnels spook you - go up thru Manhattan and take the GW - if not - just tunnel across and get over to I 80 W.
