Just went to the Smokies last month and was shocked to discover how large the Knoxville MSA is. Kinda odd that the far eastern part of the state is suffering like it is.
Knoxville is reasonably large and doing okay, but east of Knoxville is really a no man's land. Most things are actually more expensive there than here in Indy. My car insurance is a third of what it was in TN. Groceries are a good 20%-30% cheaper here. Yes, I pay state tax, but my salary more than doubled. I don't like it, but I can afford it. There's nothing to do there besides great outdoor recreation, but with median HHI of below $30k, what can you really afford to do?

There's enough to do here, enough shopping, etc, to keep most people occupied.

Naysayer here. IMO, Indiana is BEST at raising kids and families. I took a look at the reddit posting. Indianapolis is continuing to surprise me lately (and I've lived here all my life! I'm 25 btw.) didn't know Indianapolis had some of those nerdy things (Dr. Who, gaming library, etc.). I just knew we had GenCon, Star wars convention (a few years back), the more recent comic con, and pokemon tournament (b/c sister), but then again, I'm not into those sorts of nerdy things (the gaming library on the other hand sounds dope). I found this on Indiegogo:

Someone wants to open a Tapper's Arcade Bar here (and that's awesome)! So yes, I do see that there is hope on the horizon, and honestly, I wouldn't mind staying so much if I could find a job here related to my education and skills background or in my industry. I wouldn't just flat out advise people who are looking for work and aren't finding it in their state to come here though unless they are 40 yrs old with kids or something similar (then by all means come). If you want to open a business here, then come on in. Personally, I'd definitely couldn't stay here in the long run (too little stuff to do and the stuff that is here is too spread out IMO).

Indiana is great for young, single people if you can find or have the gig to support it and not mind settling in and enjoying the ride, but if you are looking around saying, "This is it?," then look elsewhere --a bigger city perhaps .
