Smile Moving to Greenwood, IN - What can I expect?

Hi everyone, I'm new here, and I hope I can get some sound opinions of Greenwood, IN.

I have lived in NW IN all my life. I grew up in Valparaiso, relocated to Michigan City for a few years and now reside in LaPorte, IN. I am now 29, newly single with children...Jobs are scarce in this area, so I have been offered to move to Greenwood with my children and stay with family until I get on my feet. My children are in 2nd and 3rd grade with a little one entering kindergarten in September.

Up until recently I have worked in the Casino industry and am planning on returning to school to finish my degree in the IT field. Basically I'd be doing any kind of entry level work that pays the bills...Does anyone have advice on nearby colleges, elementary school systems, the job availability in the area, or maybe more specifically, daycares and apartment/rental units in the area? I would just like to get an honest feel for the area, before I begin to unpack down there. Having the children and being single, it is difficult to go down a visit for a length of time to "look around" since the kids start back to school next Monday...

Any opinions/advice would be appreciated. BTW - I would rather get outside opinions than the one's of my family...they wouldn't tell me anything that may persuade me to not stay with them in this area ...LOL

We alllllllllllllllmost moved to Greenwood this summer. We were urged to stay in the White River Twp area for the Center Grove Schools. We opted for Columbus instead since hubby works down here. Do you know what school you'll be attending? Columbus has a IU & Purdue Campus as well as an Ivy Tech ... pretty impressive I think, for a small town. Anyway. You'll have easy access to IUPUI and Ivy Tech from Greenwood too.

We lived in Valpo for awhile too. We miss the food!

Best wishes for an easy transition for you and the kids so you can get back on your feet.

Default moving to greenwood

I have lived in Greenwood for 22yrs then I moved to the region. I would comapre Greenwood to Merriville. Greenwood is close to IUPUI and Ivytech. Its about a 20 min drive from Greenwood to downtown. Greenwood is a nice place to raise a family.

Personal opinion: Greenwood is safe, friendly, a little slower paced, quiet, interesting.

If you want a more fast paced life, it is available within a short drive but the area around Greenwood would be good for the kids and even better with family close.

I have always told my husband that I prefer the atmosphere of Greenwood to Castleton or Carmel. A little less attempt at trying to look the perfect life and more an attempt at living the good life.

We know how to live the good life on the Northside too, don't let the stereotypes fool you.

Greenwood is a very nice place to live...has grown a lot.
