Default Big Cities and Indy

Dyadic and I are actually on the same page on this one.

Every major city, whether it be Chicago, Indy or DC has great and not so great parts. Anytime you have a metro area above 1MM people you are going to get the haves and the have nots.

Indy is a decent mid-sized city. It is big enough to have NBA and NFL team but not so big to have all the big league sports. It has a world-class Children's Museum and all the chain restaurants anyone could want along with some cute local spots as well as a strong convention presence.

Driving north of downtown on Meridian for 10 miles you see a mix of everything from low-income housing to multi-million dollar gated mansions.

Indy is great for some people and not so great for others. If you want tropical weather, it will not suit you. If you want access to good ski slopes (Perfect North and Paoli Peaks don't count) or mountains or large body of water it will not suit you. If you like sports, particularly basketball and football you will have plenty of teams to watch, whether college or profesional and lets not forget about Nascar and Indy racing.

It has art and culture, but it is not Paris or London or even NY or Chicago. And that is okay. It has plenty else going for it which many of its nearly 2MM metro population appreciates.

Indy is actually doing a lot better than many other cities in the Midwest due to good logistics and a strong service economy. It is certainly no Detroit, where everything was reliant on one industry.

Detroit economy is actually getting a lot better, worst cities for economy lately are actually Miami, Las Vegas and Atlanta. FL, GA and NV all have unemployment around 9-11 percent which is horrible.

Default Detroit

I am not sure how anyone could claim much of a recovery in Detroit though it certainly cannot get much worse. The city just came out of bankruptcy.

I have a loan customer that does work in the townships around Detroit. We refused to lend against receivables from Detroit when the customer looked to bid on work with Detroit. This was 6 months ago.

20.4% poverty rate, high crime, poor infrastructure, bad schools, dirty air, and don't get me started on the open sewage stream that is the White River.

The OP lost all credibility with his user name, then stating Chicago ( also known as Chiraq for all of the crime and murders) and DC were the beacons of prosperity. Why is it always the obviously young, know it all crowd (that really don't have a clue) that come on here and fill the board full of negativity? The fact is, it doesn't matter where these types live, they will rip any city they live in and of course, they have all the answers.

Default I like Indy

I actually looked to move back a few years ago when looking at potential job transfer. I would consider moving back to the area if an opportunity worth pursuing presented itself.

Indy is a very livable city. The north side is all pretty decent and most of the east and west side are not too stellar. Nothing like the traffic we see everyday in Chicago. Indy weather is also better.

There is no east side Chicago (lake Michigan) but much of the south and west sides are not great. North Shore is really nice, comparable to north meridian and Burr Ridge mirrors the nicer parts of Carmel.

I don't think anyone is arguing that Indy is the most exciting place but it does have stuff to do, particularly sports and museums. Canal downtown is cute but no lake Michigan. Broad Ripple is fun but not nearly the scope of Wrigleyville. Much of this comes to scale. Chicago metro area is 5 times the size of Indy so of course there is more stuff to do. Still, there is plenty to do in Indy. For the other stuff you can do what my family in Indiana has done for generations, take occasional weekend shopping and site seeing trip to Chicago/NYC.

Indy is a great place to live and raise a family. You could do a lot worse.
