We're moving to Indy, and we've decided to live downtown for at least a year. We're renting at the Maxwell. Very excited to experience all downtown has to offer, but I'm wondering about good places for my boys (ages 5 and 10) to play. I'd appreciate any recommendations.

Get familly membership to Children's Museum, IMA. IMA has the outdoor section that is full of trails, pond, woods, etc.

There is a small downtown childs park with well maintained playground equipment on Alabama north of I65 in the Old Northside. The soccer fields next to the Old Northside are pretty quiet and allow running room. They can play ball on the mall downtown since it is large and lots of room. The library downtown also has a lot of programs and books and a great place for kids.

I am not a fan of the Monon Trail downtown section due to its somewhat isolated/commercial parts.

Thanks! We were planning on Children's Museum membership. The IMA sounds wonderful, too. We can't wait to check out the library.

We have family passes to the Children's Museum and the Zoo.

Our favorite downtown activities tend to be feeding ducks on the canal, running around at White River State Park, and riding the tricycle on the Cultural Trail. Highland Park is just east of downtown, that is our playground of choice when we are downtown. Edna Balz Lacy Park in Fletcher Place is nice too, usually more kids running around playing at that park along with an recreational adult bocce ball club that plays in the summer. I won't name names, but a current Pacer takes his kids to that park. My daughter has player with his kids more than once.

You beat me to the Highland Park recommendation! It has a playground, open space, and one of the best views of the city. It's also the closest park to the Maxwell, but the walk along New York Street isn't exactly pleasant due to the fast traffic and occasional trains.

Hey, if I was a kid, the train would be a big benefit. They are building a new YMCA just a little south of downtown (walking distance). Will have indoor and outdoor pools and other facilities. Should be finished this year.

I suppose a kid could see it that way. It's just annoying when the train is going 10MPH (or stopped) and you're just trying to walk along the sidewalk.
