Unfortunately there was a shooting at 30th and College last night. As you can see from the article, there are very few details. Most of the time in these cases, the victim likely knew the person that shot him/her and was involved in something nefarious. I'm not saying that was the case here, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I also agree that 30th and College is rougher than 34th and College which has vastly improved over the last several years. At the same time the area 5 or 6 blocks south of 30th and College is also improving. College Ave. and its surrounding streets is an area that is in a state of flux, with some bad elements, some good, long-time residents who have managed to hold on, and some new residents - many of them young professional families.

I recently relocated to this area from out of state about 6 months ago and would like to think that I have a pretty unbiased opinion of the neighborhood. I live at 34th and Pennsylvania, a few blocks west of the property you are considering. The good: I have never personally felt unsafe in this area of town. I'd happily walk around alone outside during the daytime here, and it is extremely close to both downtown and Broad Ripple and all kinds of truly awesome places like IMA and the Children's Museum. However, you can easily travel a few blocks from this location and end up in some sketchy areas. The businesses on 38th street are close by and not places I mind frequenting during the daytime, but personally I would not shop or run errands around there after dark. Honestly I usually just end up driving a little further out and have no troubles whatsoever. For me that's probably the biggest downfall, along with all you crazy Hoosier drivers! I would say for me, though, the goods outweigh the bads. Everyone in and around my community is very friendly and pleasant, and come from all walks of life. In regards to the crime rate, I've actually never witnessed a crime take place here personally. If you are smart about where you go at night and keep yourself out of trouble here I would say your chances of becoming a victim are probably pretty slim (knock on wood).
