I might be moving to Indianapolis and I was wondering what areas are filled more with young people (ie. under 30ish)? Are there areas that may be a little more alternative/hippie, perhaps with health food stores or yoga or something? I'm from California if you couldn't tell...

Broad Ripple and Fountain Square are very hip, artsy communities. I am more familiar with BR, and there are galleries, shops, bistros, and night clubs and a museum where the the owners, as well as the clientele are among the younger set. Broad Ripple is always happening!

For the most part, Indianapolis is hopelessly boring and culturally defunct for such a large city. But, the broadripple area is pretty cool.

Broadripple for the younger crowd at night. Due to the number of bars, restaurants(all prices), music, coffee houses, etc. Sometimes too much for the nearby home owners.
Art League, funky shops, oldest natural food store, beads, fun. Nice that the Monon Trail goes right thru. There is also the canal to walk along from Butler to Broad Ripple. But, it is a small area unlike some of the neighborhoods in California. |

Even if you work downtown? What kind of commute would I be looking at to get to IUPUI every day? What about living downtown?

Lordy lord, Broad Ripple wouldn't be that far ... 15-20 minutes maybe?

We lived in Broad Ripple while husband in school and it was only an easy 15 minute ride. There are many gridded streets so if there is any kind of backup on one street, you just move over to another north/south street. Not like getting stuck on a hiway.
If you can afford it, living downtown would get you a whole lot more time at home and you could possibly even walk to IUPUI. We live downtown and love it. Quiet, safe, easy access to any part of town. Dont need to leave if we dont want to get in car. There are rentals and buying options in Ransom Place right next to IUPUI. No car needed to get to school and therefore no parking issues. |
