Does Anybody Care?
I have been watching the local congressional race in Indy and wondered about this. André Carson, Democratic Congressional Candidate in Indiana’s 7th District is a Muslim. He wouldn't be representing my district, but it got me thinking...
Carson describes himself as "an Orthodox, universal, secular Muslim." If elected, he would be the second Muslim to serve in the U.S. Congress, after Keith Ellison, and the first from Indiana. He has been endorsed by Senator Bayh, former Mayor Peterson, Sheriff Anderson, Brad Elsworth, retired U.S. Congressman Andy Jacobs Jr. and The Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan. Although, Carson denies any specific link to Farrakhan.
Does it matter to anyone in Indianapolis, or in any part of Indiana, that another member of 'the religeon of peace' will be representing US citizens in Congress?
I believe this would have been a moot point in years gone by, because most Americans see themselves as tolerant and open minded. But these are different times.
Now, we are at war with radical Islamo-Facist Muslims.
Do we make the leap and say Mr. Carson is guilty by religeous association? Do we continue to hold the line for tolerance and openmindedness? Can we afford to allow any hint of subversion in our national governing body? Or is this just 'no big deal'?
I haven't seen much conversation about this, so I thought I would pose the question to you folks here- does anybody care?

I don't understand what an orthodox, universal secular muslim is??? Wouldn't some of those designations cancel each other out?? Wonder what Mosque he attends.

What brand of Christianity are members of congress?
Baptist? Ok, which Baptist? Southern, American, Grace, Bible, Black Primitive, National, Old Regular, Regular, Reformed, Separate, Christian Unity, Evangelical Free, United Free, United, World Alliance or World Fellowship, General Six-Principal, Fundamental, Two-Seed-in-the-Spirit Predestinarian, Sovereign Grace, Southeast Conservative? These are just some examples of Christian Churches/Baptist flavor. It's not even ALL Baptist flavors, there's more!
How about Catholic? Which flavor? Presbyterian? Which flavor? Lutheran? Which flavor? The list goes on and on.
Someone here said to read the second amendment a while back. It says:
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
From this it is gleaned that everyone has the right to go to Wal-Mart and buy the biggest, baddest gun they can find and bring it home. No questions asked, it's their right under the constitution.
The first amendment reads as follows:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Does this not give Americans the right to practice whatever religion they choose and not be penalized over their choice?

Absolutely!!! I've just never heard of Carson's "flavor" of Islam. What's wrong with wondering? But then again, he's not in my district, but it's still interesting.

His faith makes no difference to me whatsoever.
I did the weirdest thing. I checked out his position on the issues.
I'll be voting for Elrod

I'm not anti-Muslim but look at what that religion is doing to Europe. The Muslim religion is peaceful but deviations from the religion towards the radical side is extremely dangerous. Everyone has to take this into consideration. This can be a very very dangerous religion when it's more radical form takes a stronghold on the youth.
Radical Christians play with snakes. Radical Muslims blow themselves up to kill infidels.
We should all look at this religion with caution.
Given all that, I'm voting for Elrod based on the issues. Religion has no bearing to me.

Well, it seems that everyone in Carson's district didn't mind that he is a Muslim. He won pretty convincingly.
<sorry TJ, this isn't the proper place for that ...dg >

Hi Jack...he doesn't represent my district either, but some people I work with live in his district and I can tell you it has been a subject of discussion.
Personally, I don't care what his religious (or, for that matter, his political) affiliation is. As a voter, I am way more interested in where he stands on issues that matter to me and how his election to Congress will affect me because he will now have a much louder voice.
Those I work with have talked at length about his religion, though, and seem to harbor some concern. So, even though the media hasn't spent a lot of time on it, I still think it was discussed in some circles.
But, he won (this time).

He won and it's time to close this thread. Let me know if this is a problem.
