When I look at a map (aerial/satellite/birds' eye), I see a strip of open land ("open" meaning no buildings on it) running NE/SW all the way through Carmel, and I'm wondering what that is?

At the southwest, it looks like it starts a bit north of W 106th St between US-421/N Michigan Rd & Shelbourne Rd, and it continues northeast all the way to E 156th & 31/N Meridian St. In some stretches, it looks like a nice greenbelt with a paved trail running between neighborhoods of single-family residences.

Anyone know what that strip is? Is it indeed green space meant to remain that way, or could it be land set aside for a future roadway?

Huh...interesting. Anyone know where I can read more about this? So far, simply Googling hasn't been fruitful.

You have to know where to look....

It's a right of way for a natural gas pipeline owned by Panhandle Eastern.

There is a large compressor station outside of Zionsvile that this transits through on it's way to Michigan.

Not really. Panhandle Eastern used to be a customer of mine, so as soon as I saw the area you described I knew it was the right of way for one of their pipelines.

Nearly all of the gasoline, diesel and natural gas you get is moved through pipelines. If you're ever out in the Clermont area off of Raceway and Crawfordsville Road you'll see some of the largest pipeline terminals in the area where the tankers that bring gasoline and diesel to your local station fill up - from these pipelines.

It's also how jet fuel gets to Indianapolis International.
