You might be surprised to know that if the CIB approves the Eleven Park project that Indy just might get a MLS status sooner then you think.Google the major project their going for.

It's about media markets, not population as much. Indy is not very high in media market ranking to have 3-4 major league teams.

Indy is pretty well surrounded my franchises in other markets within a half day's drive. You can get to Chicago in three hours. They have NHL and two MLB teams. Cincinnati is two hours away with MLB. St. Louis, Detroit, and Nashville all provide other options for the occasional trip from Indy in terms of sports.

You're exactly right Serious Conversation. I never would have went to Cincinatti if it hadn't been for the zoo or the Reds. I remember going to 3 or maybe 4 games at Crosley Field and 1 game at Riverfront Stadium. We would make those trips in a day, even if the game was at night. Back then, we didn't have enough money for a motel. If we would have had to stay in a motel, we wouldn't have gone to the game.

Good comments being made about how close Indy is to other metro areas. That is one positive about Indy, so long as a person is into visiting other major metros. It wasn't until recently I actually had a desire to visit major cities. We went to NYC about six or so years ago and I had much more fun than I thought. I never really got out and about when I was younger and was drawn to more back-country, mountain type areas. I really want to check out Louisville and Cincinnati more. Went to a ballgame with work friends last year plus went to their non-smoking casino. I really like downtown Cincinnati. The riverfront and bridge we walked over to the KY side was amazing.

Personally, about eight hours in the car is my limit. More than that and I'll fly.
That's one thing I miss about Indy - being relatively close to other places. I made tons of weekend trips while living. Chicago several times. Cincinnati probably a dozen times. Half a dozen trips to various places in Michigan. Nashville.

Indianapolis is not a sports town. It just isn't. Yes, people buy jerseys and go to the games but its not religion like it is in some cities. Walk into any neighborhood bar in Buffalo, NY in the off season and you'll find a table of arm-chair quarterbacks arguing for hours on end about last season and the upcoming season. Compare that to Indianapolis - a week after the Colts won the Superbowl it was already old news.

It could be because the Colts haven't been in Indy as long as other NFL teams have been in their respective cities.

I'm happy to say that you WILL find Colts representation in sports bars here in Seattle - not a sports bar that can be called a Colts bar, mind you - but you do see blue and white jerseys throughout different places in town. Also, the three times Colts have played here since I've been here (including one preseason game) Colts nation was well represented at Qwest/Century Link
