Have returned to Columbus, Indiana from Florida. Family member was diagnosed with bipolar disorder there, and am trying to locate a reputable, psychiatrist to manage his care.

Called Centerstone in Columbus, Indiana, and sounded totally different than the practice that used to be there. Intake person on phone was rude. Said first a phone registration, then he must show up on Mon-Thurs for "intake eval." I questioned by whom? She said...by a therapist, but couldn't say who, or credentials. Then, therapist would see him for "several visits" before deciding if he needed to see a psychiatrist.

My question to her: That makes no sense. He is on medication that needs/must be prescribed by a doctor. Therapists can not do that. I know, because I'm an R.N. He doesn't need to see a therapist, he needs to see a doctor. Her response to me: "Maybe Centerstone is not for you." Good grief.

Anybody know of a good doc in Indianapolis area, Bloomington area, or anywhere withing reasonable driving distance of Columbus???

Thanks,

I don't know if you would consider Avon (west side of Indianapolis just north of the airport) reasonable driving distance, but we had a family member who was bipolar that went to what is now Genoa Health Care https://www.genoahealthcare.com and they did some wonderful things for them. At the time they were employed but uninsured, and the folks at Genoa went out of their way to help maintain their medications through the use of samples, assistance programs, etc.

While it's been a few years since they were treated there, that was their experience and it was a really positive one. I guess it's possible they have other locations that might be closer to you, I didn't poke around on their web site.

Good luck. The only way folks like this can get along is with strong advocates - the system does not work to their advantage, I know that all too well.
