There are a ton of foreclosures. $28-$35 /hr is not only doable, it is probably low. I have another buddy that has his own General Contracting business, he charges in the neighborhood of $50/hr plus materials.

ImGibby-Thanks so much for your help!
RIght now, hubby charges $65/hr + matrls, so that's great that it's almost the same!! When you work for an actual contracting company though, they usually charge the customer 75-80/hr and pay the worker 30-35. THat's the business, very sad. THat's why it's great to be your own boss, but you have to know people and land jobs- tricky in a new city. Is your friend who has his own business working alone and does he have a lot of work? People in CA are remodel Crazy, they remodel their homes just for the fun of it, it's quite sick actually. Just wondering if there are lots of people that waste money there. That's the only way to stay in business, especially if the economy is slowly declining. Thanks a bunch! |

Thanks DVick for your response.
I will check into Beech Grove, Southport and Greenwood! Hubby is very talented, he has his own business here, so he's not just a common working man, he's a business man too, but I get what you're saying about the neighborhoods you mentioned, the people are probably more open and actually home with their families. I chose the northern neighborhoods so we'd be close to where hubby works. He likes to come home for lunch and not have to sit in traffic. If I can find a fixer upper, it shouldn't be too expensive. We're coming from Calif, where homes are like 700K, so if a home is $100-$200K we'll take it! We'll be on the lower end of the scale as far as the income there, but that's ok. Thanks again for the input! |

I would say there are a lot of people with money to throw around on there houses here, particulary in the areas you originally mentioned. It is amazing how may well to do people there are around here, you would not think it from the outside until you start driving around and see how many expensive homes there are. |

Thanks everyone! Now I just have to convince my hubby to move there. He kinda likes it here, so it might be a few years. I really want to live in a house, not an apartment. I also like that Indiana is a conservative state and a road trip to his family (7 hours-Dunkirk, NY).
Thanks for all your advice! -I will look into Columbus. |
