I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me. I am moving into a subdivision that is about a year or 2 old now in the Carmel/Westifeld area, and wanted to know some things about the housing subdivisions in Indy. I am really asking these questions to those who live in newer subdivisions.
1. Are neighbors generally friendly? Are they the type of people where you will have neighborhood block parties or borrow tools from? 2. Do you get a lot of snow? I am coming from Cali. Do you get snowed in a lot? Are summers bogged with rainy days? 3. Are people snobby in the newer subdivisions like they are here? I dont really talk to my neighbors here, and that is something I want there. 4. Do kids get bored? What do kids generally do aside from skateboard, etc in a place like Indiana? 5. Do many women work? Here it is about 7 in 9 women work here, do women tend to stay home more since housing is less expensive? I would appreciate answers to some or part of my questions as well as other info. Thanks. |

The answer to most of your questions does not depend on where you live, in my opinion.
*Are neighbors friendly? If you are friendly to them. Parties? Sure! Go ahead and plan one! *Snow, we get a couple good snowfalls per year, we haven't been "snowed in" in years though. We get a couple feet at the most, and once in a while we miss a couple days of school. Summers are dry, spring is rainy-er. Did I just make up a word?? LOL *People are snobby everywhere, and there are people who are not snobby everywhere. Be friendly and open and you will probably get that in return. *Do kids get bored? Does a fish like water? Is the sun hot? Of course kids get bored, they would no matter where you live. *Do women work? I do, mainly because if I stay at home the walls will close in on me and I will go insane. Indiana is a great place to live, very affordable, enough entertainment to keep you busy if you choose, quiet spots if you prefer that. Our "bad" traffic doesn't even come close to most cities. The weather is mild, but we do have seasons. The schools are good, and people are generally friendly. Welcome!! |

Welcome to Carmel/Westfield! I've lived here for many years and love it - I am moving out of state due to a job relocation and will miss this area. I have 3 kids that have always found plenty to do... summers, in my neigbhorhood anyway, are great because of n'hood amenities. (swimming, tennis, bball, volleyball, playground, walking/bike trails).
The Monon is right here, plenty of shopping. This has been a perfect place to raise kids and the school system (Westfield) is great. Hope you love it like we did! |

.I would just like to say that you are moving to Indianapolis, not Indiana, they are two differnt things. There is alot to do in the summer. We have this big gaming convention called gen con, about a million concerts; the biggest concert would be warp tour. My friends and I spent a day in broad ripple alone and had a great time. Colts, pacers, and indian(basball) games are popular among alot of people here. The state fair is also big here and there are always small carnivals poping up around the area. I know there a a few car shows too, one on the eastside every friday. Dotown always has something to do in the summer. That's not even half of the events that go down in the summer, not to mention we are so close to chicago (the best city in the world in the summer time, in my opinion) In the fall alot of high schools have big football games that can be fun and brown country state park is best in the fall. In winter there is alot less but you could go ice skating at the pepsi stadium. as for normal things that other cities have most our malls and movie threaters are great espically on the north side. alot of kids say they are bored here... while i'll admit indy dosent' have as much as chicago or new york does but it does have alot.... I'm not some biased guy telling you" indianapolis is the best city in the world" because i know it's not i even want to move to nyc someday but i know what we have is something.... sorry that was so long.5. Yes, women work but it is likely that you would see less doing so in that area. |

"Are summers bogged with rainy days?"
I also moved to Indy from Ca (LA) and the rain was the oddest part of my transition. In Los Angeles, there are two rainy seasons march and november, the rest of the year is generally sunny. It rains in Indy all year about once a week on average save spring and fall when it rains two to three times a week on average. You have to remember it is a different climate and a different way of life. It is wet and green and quite beautiful. Also, the summer rains are very warm and humid which makes them remarkable. as for your other question regarding weather, "2. Do you get a lot of snow?" No, ~40 inches per winter and it usually comes in spurts: Indy is not buffalo. We get a couple of 6-8 inch snow events which make life a little more interesting but it makes for some great photos and is fun to play in as well. Though, one thing you may have trouble with is the overall cold in winter and lack of sun. The skies are dark and grey and the cold does not go away. It can be taxing but it does make spring the best time of year. |
