I did
I was born here and Indiana and was here 19 years before I decided to move to L.A. The taxes were at 10% when I got there and were raised just weeks before I moved back. The price of living is VERY expensive! No matter what part of L.A. you move to. I was paying $1250 a month for a 2 br apt that was no bigger than a 2 car garage. Not exhagerating! That is why I moved back! They are laying off a lot of teachers and police officers because they cant afford to pay them. They also were talking about giving I OWE YOUS instead of tax refunds! Which in my opinion I think is rediculous because you have to pay a little something something no matter where you go! Anyway clothes and getting your nails done etc. can be pretty cheap with all the little stores but there is a lot of people and a lot of cars. It definitly wasnt a place I was very fond of. Especially being from a small town in Indiana! The people drive like maniacs! They will cut you off on the freeway automatically expecting you will stop, they seem to not care if they hit anything! Especially have to be careful when it rains because it does not rain often at all, and people dont know how to drive when it does! Well that is my opinion.
About Indiana, I like that it isnt very populated but the fruit, vegetables and milk taste WAY better in California. It does get boreing seeing the same ole thing all the time. Where ever you travel to in Indiana it is all the same. Feels like you never get anywhere very fast at all. Jobs are getting bad in Cali. My opinion, jobs here and there are the same! There arent any!
I hated the earthquakes. First one I experianced I had no clue what to think. The weather here is better because its not too dry. And we are warned ahead of time. But if it all comes down to it I'd say it's 50/50. Not one is better than the other.

Just a guess ... but Indiana has a lot of companies that supplies the auto industry or had a lot.

Yup, the sunshine tax was too much for me too.
If a recession/depression riot happens, it will most likely start in a city like LA. I'd hate to be in a large urban setting if that did happen. At least in Plainfield I'll have a fightling chance
People do tend to drive fast. I got used to it though... I think the people here drive way too slow

Try the MAYBERRY CAFE (authentic MAYBERRY memorabilia!) in downtown Danville, IN. It is a true classic.

Peru is a quaint small town. I would suggest settling there. There is much more crime in Logansport than Peru.

I would go to Jasper. The I-69 interstate project will be close to your town. Jasper has a great German history.

Indiana is more populated than you think. Even though its only a fraction of Cailfornia's population of like 39 million, Indiana ranks 15th in population with 6.5 million residents. I think thats very healthy.

The only type of shock you should be prepared for is the climate difference. Its humid in the summers for the most part and chilly in the winter. The weather changes pretty quickly and we always have a saying," If you dont like the weather just wait 5 minutes." LOL
