Default Bought Country Home in 2005 outside of Ft Wayne, IN

Still have the luxury of owning home in California, however I love so much of northeast indiana. Never thought I'd say I love the site of Corn, soy beans & winter wheat growing But I do.......

People seem very friendly, and there are less people in the entire state of Indiana then in Los Angeles county alone!!!!!

Winter can be a drag, and cloudy weather can be depressing when it seems to go on and on for weeks at a time, but all in all I love it there--crappy weather & all.

My husband and I are retired, not so sure I'd have bought home there if I needed to seek employment. (food for thought)

Thanks! So far we are really happy here! My hubby and I were just talking about how comfortable we feel here, like we have been here for years already! We have had a couple pf storms and I am loving it, wish it would rain more up here actually! lol. The kids adjusted to the time change the second day. I kept them from their nap, put them to bed at 8 pm here, 5 pm Cali time, and they have gone to bed like that since then!!!
We are really happy here. Hubby's job is not steady yet but hopefully it will be in a couple of weeks then we can find a house to rent!

We were just up in Logansport this past week for a couple of days. My DH may take a position with a company in Logan. We drove around Logan,Lafayette/West Lafayette, and Kokomo. We didn't make it to Peru though. We need a rental house as well. I am not sure where I want to live. We prefer a country area but close to a larger area. Not sure what to think about Logan at this point. Why did you decide not live in Kokomo? We drove through there going home, but didn't stay long. We should know if we are going to Logansport area or take another offer in Jasper, Which is in southern IN.

Jasper is one of the best towns in the state. Good schools, beautiful town ... kind of isolated though.

Kokomo is still to "city" for us. The atmosphere is not country like and though it is nothing like California it is to bustling for what we want. We want to sit on our porch in the evenings and hear and occasional car but not a constant buzz. We want to drive through town and it see a few cars but not be surrounded. There are a lot of bars in Kokomo. They have a beautiful park there, Highland Park, with lots of play areas and areas for parties and the river runs through it with little bridges to cross it. That is really the only place we like to visit. We do go to the stores in Kokomo, but we do not mind the drive in.
Peru is suiting our needs. Logasport's "Downtown" areas are crowded and have a few one way streets to get used to but the homes and neighborhoods have a friendly feel. Kokomo just seems to packed, no real space to take a breath in. We just want a big yard and big trees and a mid west home town feel so we prefer Logansport and Peru. We found Tipton just yesterday, about 20 miles south of Kokomo. The streets are tree lined and they have a nice downtown and a BBQ place that smelled devine when we drove past. We are going to look more into Tipton, it only has about 5,000 residents where Peru in more like 13,000.
It really depends on what you want but I don't get the homey country feel in Kokomo, there are a lot of businesses and the Chrysler/Delphi plants out there.
I think we most likely will stay in Peru until we are ready to buy. There are plenty of houses to rent and a couple of apartment complexes. When we are ready to buy it will either be on the South East side of Peru, by the golf course or closer to BUS 31, Logasport near the High/Middle/Elementry school, (lots of trees and bigger lots there), or possibly now Tipton. I havae always dreamed of a tree lined streets, like in the movie Big.
I hope this helps you in some way!

We are relocating to Rushville IN from Santa Monica CA. They say you can never come back home but whoever made that up must have owed someone a lot of money.

I was born & raised in Anderson, IN.
Now turning 50 this year I am coming back home to live.
I've been living in Northern California and 4 yrs ago when we flew back to Indy to visit relatives, my husband was in culture shock how nice everyone was. The park we went to was like going back into time in the 1950's , he couldn't get over how people, places and things were so "backwards" and loved it. (the swing sets were from the 50's style, nothing like Californias plastic or wood play sets at city and school parks)

He loved having everyone saying "hello" with a wave of a hand instead of the middle finger.
We ate at Mom & Pop food joints and he tried his first Fried Green Tomato.. talk about loving Indiana. And White Castle hamburger, my DH can't get enough of Indiana. But to drive down country roads, look at the corn, taking a whiff of the pig farms.... oh yeah that's Indiana!!!

We hate to take a loss on our home with real estate being the way it is, but he recently had to take an early retirement, we can no longer afford the California living we loved.

Looking forward to coming home to Indiana. The beauty of their land, the people, etc can never be compared to California.I could list many negative things about California, lived here since 1966. You just can't compare Indiana to California.
Unless your one who wants mountains, ocean, historical points of interest, then stay in California.
Give me farm fresh air and corn rows

I'm also moving to Indy from Torrance CA and was wondering what are the culture differences between the two states, if any, as far as nightlife, people and atmosphere? I know cost of living is a huge difference. I'm sure all of my Cali folks know that! This is a very good topic.

I just visited Indianapolis with a friend who is moving to Indy from Baltimore . I loved it !! I loved the pace and how clean the city is - and the people are very friendly , and the mature trees -and tree lined streets and very cute and beatuiful houses and many many bungalows !... I really loved it - we looked for houses to rent - in Broad Ripple and in Butler Tarkington - found a little one in Butler Tarklkington near Butler ... I loved Broad Ripple. It turns out that my father lived here when he was about 10 yrs old-on Winthrop - next to the then mayor - probably in 1935 or so . The Mayor had Booth Tarkington over for Lunch . My dad and his friends snuck next door and looked into the windows -until the mayor shooed them away . !!! We drove on Winthrop near Broad Ripple dog park ... i imagine that blk is where my father used to live -but i am not sure . Anyway - I loved what i saw of your city . The only thing missing was the Pacific Ocean and a lot more antique stores !!. I will be back alot i think ...
