Mastiff Owners!!! Vet recommendations?
I'm about to acquire a mastiff pup and need to vet who is familiar with mastiffs and other giant breed dogs. With all that I have been reading on mastiff reactions to common anesthetics, proper x-ray placement to determine hip/elbow problems, etc, I want to make sure that the vet I frequent is familiar with their health issues and has plenty of experience and knows what s/he is doing.
For those in the Indianapolis area that own mastiffs, do you have vets that you recommend? And do you have an emergency vet/clinic in addition to your regular vet?
Thanks in advance for the input!

For emergency care, the clinic on Bash in Castleton cannot be beat. Caring compassionate for both pet and owner. We had what was a major issue for us but pretty minor in the scope of what they do and they did a wonderful job and the costs were very reasonable. We laugh about it now but were pretty worried pet owners. They have a lot of specialists on duty during the day for things like eye issues too but it is more a referral service during the day I think.

Thanks Sweetana3 for the recommendation; I'll check that one out.
So I guess there aren't many mastiff owners out here...? Are there any giant breed owners with vets that they recommend??

It's good you're planning ahead etc. The breeder you're getting your mastiff from should have connections as they usually network etc but you can always try Mastiff Club of America, INC. for more info, referrals etc. Not sure if meetup.com has a mastiff meetup club in your area but that w/b another avenue to pursue for recommendations etc - they may even have playdates etc. Good luck!

I've consulted MCoA for breeder referrals, but I didn't know they did vet referrals too. I will definitely look into that. And talk to the breeder if he knows anyone in my area as well. I was hoping I could get recommendations from people with actual experience from taking their giant breed dog to the vet/clinic.
I actually do participate in meetup.com for social reasons. Sadly they do not have a mastiff meetup in our area (the closest thing is a bully breed meetup for walking and socializing dogs, which is great, but no mastiff/giant breed meetups).

I have a Mastiff and live on South side. We go to two different vets. Ivec 24 hour emergency clinic(788-2042 at Victory drive and Emerson ave. Beech Grove area. He donates blood every other month, he has a rare blood type. Found that out after an emergency. They also treat several other Mastiffs, up to 5 others I think. Our everyday vet. is South Keystone Animal Clinic...Dr. Mason great man.(788-4543) Hope this helps!
