I'll chime in as a St. Louisian (peeked on the forum after seeing the provel cheese thread). I suppose Chicago is the best Midwestern city by default, although I think the winters and the traffic suck. I've lived in Des Moines IA which was a nice enough place and Kansas City which is really under-rated. Detroit didn't impress me at ALL, my SIL is from Grosse Pointe though, which is lovely. I go to Minneapolis occasionally which I think is a clean world-class city just under Chicago.
However, I love, love the grittiness and history of St. Louis. It gets in your blood I guess. We have so many neighborhoods here. More Bosnians than anywhere in the US. One of the largest Reform Jewish populations. Tons of old ethnic Catholic neighborhoods. You can go to the Lebanese Catholic church or Greek Orthodox church for great ethnic lunches (they probably have those everywhere though).
Honestly, when I go on vacation I usually go North, West or South because I figure most of the old river towns are pretty much the same as St. Louis and I rather go to the beach or mountains. I don't have much of an impression of Indianapolis except that it is about 5 hours from St. Louis and so are Kansas City, Memphis, Chicago and Nashville and they all seem to have more to offer than Indianapolis. It might not necessarily be true, it's just that I don't even know anyone from Indianapolis, have never heard about a vibrant music scene or anything in particular that would draw me to it like Kansas City or Memphis BBQ or Blues, Nashville has beautiful scenary nearby and Chicago has pretty much everything.
If it makes you feel better, St. Louis has serious Chicago envy as well. We are alway comparing ourselves to Chicago and I'm not sure Chicago even knows St. Louis exists unless there is a Cardinal/Cubbie series going on. Of course, that is the ONE are where St. Louis beats Chicago. We are the best baseball town in the world.

No, not in Indy ... sigh. Food is all like paper sacks. There are some very good high end restaurants, but the ethnic food? Sure, here and there, but there aren't really restaurant rows, there's one little ethnic place here and one little ethnic place there.

Thems fightin' words my friend .. who has the best record in baseball??? Please tell me .. type it, type it, type it!!!
I was letting this thread marinate and I came up with an interesting theory about midwest towns. The thing that all the unique midwest cities have is a distinct mafia presence. St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit .. Chicago ... and KC for sure ...wonder why that is. The only thing Indy ever had was the KKK, note HAD!!!

But St. Louis really is an amazing baseball town. Even when the Cardinals aren't doing well, St. Louis still packs them in. We love our baseball team. We love our beer too but that's not going so well these days.

I can't believe AB is even entertaining them! That will be a travesty for St. Louis. As diehard a Cubs fan that I am, I'll feel bad for Cards fans ....
Cubbies!!!

I'm upset because yet another Midwestern born business is most likely leaving the Midwest and to a foreign company. Money motivates but it's not like the people receiving the money don't already have enough. I'm a Sox fan though.

It's a done deal St. Louis ... hard to believe.
InBev agrees to buy Anheuser for $50 billion: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance (broken link)
Hope all the uppity ups enjoy their windfall at the expense of the citizens of St. Louis, this "biere" is for you

Home prices are a huge factor here. Indy homes are the cheapest in the midwest by far. Ohio is a dump and the prices even in Dayton are still much higher. Noblesville, IN has new homes from Centex for 100k. The town has no crime <mod cut ... racist> and is only 20 minutes outside of downtown Indy. Chicago is a mess. Crime, high prices and a <mod cut ... come on, be nice>
