I agree about 38th St. especially around Keystone. Even though the area had suburban housing stock it is definetely a ghetto. Within a 10 block area along 38th St., there were at least 3 memorials for shooting victims. What a shame.

You have to wonder if in a few years those "McMansions" built in the housing boom will be Section 8 apartments and people on thsi board will be saying "Stay away from that drug and gang infested Carmel and Greenwood, the only safe place to be is downtown!
That could be the truth. It appears to me, unfortunately, we are heading in that direction.

I haven't read one post on this thread, but considering how many posts/views this thread has received, one would imagine that there are MANY dangerous neighborhoods in Indy.

That would be correct. Afterall, Indy is the 13th (or so) most populated city in the US. 700K + people.

The one thing I have found is that crime is pockmarked throughout the city corresponding with bad neighborhoods.

Had they all died, that would have added on six more homicides.

Of course I am waiting for the "38th St. ain't that bad" comments. When the police force has to basically have extra patrols along both the east _and_ west parts of a major city street, that should tell you something.

I have been on 38th street for it's entire length in Indianapolis.Their are 3 segments of 38th street that I think are okay. 38th and Dandy Trail to I-465, 38th and White River Parkway to Meridian Street and 38th East of Mitthoefer Road.

My grandfather taught at Tech in the 1960's, and we lived in Woodruff Place. The neighborhood was "dicey" then, and I have a feeling it's not much better now?

There are some rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods on the near east side. The reason is the proximity of downtown and the investment by business in the areas directly to the east of downtown.

But I still think you cannot go much beyond the women's prison area and feel safe. At least until Irvington. By safe, I mean physical safety. Closed and boarded up or unkempt businesses are big clues. I think the most important part is having a well developed and involved neighborhood group. Often I call this "the eyes of the neighborhood".
