Still, it's not the same as an IU or a Purdue. Indy needs a Division 1 school both academic and athletic. That would really bring a lot of money into the city from in terms of research and the revenue from the additional sporting events.

Maybe it would be great to have yet another large university here, but in terms of total enrollment IUPUI is in the top 40 or so in the country. They just don't get very much bigger than that.
It's bigger than any university in Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Louisville, or Detroit, from what I can tell.
What Indianapolis needs the most are several high-wage employers. The things you folks are mentioning - streetcars, NHL teams, etc. - don't PRODUCE prosperity; they are PRODUCTS of prosperity. Big cities with a large enough population can handle multiple professional sports franchises. Indy can't. Big cities with a dense enough population can support rail transit. Indy can't. I realize we're just shooting the breeze about things that would be nice to have, but if you're seriously talking about what this city needs "most," it certainly isn't anything like a 3rd major league sports team or swapping out our buses with streetcars. It's jobs, period. Well-paying jobs. Twenty years of suckling at the convention/tourist teat has given Indy a little splash of success in a very small area downtown, but nothing anywhere else.
