Indianapolis is also a pretty major convention city ... seems like there's some organization or trade group in town every week.

Yes, that, too. Indy does know how to put on a show.

Little bit of everything
Great night life in Broadripple, and downtown Indy has a lot to offer (museums, movies, restaurant, sports, farmers market, shopping, canal walk is cool...). The Monon trail (rails to trails type project) is an excellent amenity for run/walk/bike. There's usually a lot going on, I don't live there but am a native Hoosier and always enjoyed going to Indy for its night life, concerts, festivals and shopping. Indy's terrain is flat, but southern Indiana's rolling hills and state parks are about an hour drive south and have nice scenery as well as beautiful fall color. The airport is convenient and its size allows for affordable fares.

reisooh - nice post... however, while I too have enjoyed many a days and nights at such events, I don't see that I could or would want to live there - its not a SF, Chicago, StL, Boston, etc. Yea, alot of that is due to size, but still, I dunno, just seems "flat", both in topography and in atmosphere. Not that much "richness" or history, at least that I've been exposed to - if such exists, please, no offense, but share where such can be seen Anyhow, while wouldn't foresee living there, its a good city, enjoy it, like to visit.

On a scale of 1-10, ten being best, would rate Indy a 7.

I have been through there on a few different occasions (2003 going to and from Washington, DC and 2007 going from Virginia). It was not a horrible city but probably not the most exciting city. My impression is that it is a decent Midwestern city/metro area. Yes, I remembered the area being flat, but the lay of the land reminds me of the area where I reside in South Dakota (along with the corn and soybeans in the countryside). For a sizeable city, I found it easy to get around. The people are nice too.

Jesus Christ, it's the same thing over and over again.
Let's just call it a decent city and call it a day.

My in-laws live in Indy. Very much a "meh" city that doesn't seem to have much of a sense of place or self or purpose. It's livable enough and it has a very reasonable cost of living.... but it's just underwhelming.

It's ok. White River State Park is nice and I spend a lot of time there and on the canal walking. I would LOVE to have reliable public transportation. Maybe I'm not going to the right places, but I'm not seeing much of a nightlife.
Plus, I'm a beach girl. I'm happiest at the beach so take my words with a grain of salt.
