Also in our situation, being self employed, which a lot of people that make a good amount of money are, or they are as Southside Shrek said, Dr's, lawyers, CEO's etc....we have to come in with more money down.. We have done a lot of house buying and a few construction loans, 5 % is unheard of....
Again it is what you are comfortable with....Myself, i need 4000SQ FT, i have 4 kids, and i like my space, do i need or want more, Not really, i had a BIG house, and it sucked to clean, let alone the utitlies... Again,it is your comfort zone, and what you want to spend your hard earned money on...Us, i want areally nice place, great schools, a slower pace of life, and my husband not to work his a$$ off for HUGE house (and payment) that i don't want to clean anyways!!!
Also things are not what they may appear, and that is where people in get into trouble judging....It is not a very nice thing to do, and if you only want to be my friend, because i have a nice house, drive nice cars, and have designer jeans, then you would not be someone i would want to be friends with.....I guess that is why i think it is so sad here in Ca, everyone is so busy keeping up with the Joneses, they can not come up for air....let alone see decent people around them....I will take some crappy weather over the sunshine for that anyday of the week.......

The more info of yours I read, the more I become convinced that Carmel really is the only place you might feel comfortable in Indiana. I still would strongly advise visiting before you move, and renting before you buy.

Zoo Animals.......Much agreed!!!
Micki...yep done all that....
Naptowner....Thanks for clarification. We do both, and foundations as well, here. Landscape maintenance is the least favorite, but it starts earning income as soon as you start and get established in a place, then build the business from there. My husband has been in this field 20+ years.

well, I certainly wouldn't assume they are poor and on food stamps.

Zoo Animals,
I was agreeing with your post about the misconception of Dr's etc having a high net worth....I do not know if you are meaning it sarcastically that i belong in Carmel or what....
Have a great day none the less.....

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. I just realized that I had been assuming too much when you said you wanted to downsize and live a quieter lifestyle. When I realized that by downsizing you meant to a $600K, 4000+ sq. ft. house, it seemed to me that Carmel was more the type of area you were looking for than Greenwood, Avon, etc.
That's not a bad thing, and I certainly didn't mean any disrespect.

Thanks Zoo Animals Sometimes posts can be taken the wrong way.
I am in a hard position here, trying to look at places you have not been, and uproot your family, it is tough. I know a lot of people do it everyday, but i am a creature of habit (at a whole 34 years of life!!) I have lived in th esame place for 22 years, and while i am comfortable, because i know my surroundings and know what i am in for.....i know it is the right thing for us to move out of California. It is just trying to find that place.
When you look at the Best Places to live, naturally you explore them, and Fishers was #10....I have heard the traffic is not good there, so i explored around there, and came up with Carmel....There are always going to be snooty people, i don't care where you go, there will always be the ones that do not get themselves together, and then there will be the over the top ones!! That is everywhere, and i get that.
I just want a clean happy place to raise our kids and slow down. It is scary, especially with the economy, but i would rather be in a place and make less money and be happier with my surroundings..Rather than stay here and make a lot less money and not be happy with what is around us, oh ya, except for the sun, everyone loves the sun shining.....but it is not everything!~!!

The Fishers traffic issue is silliness.

It amazes me how inconsistent the traffic can be. Sometimes it moves smoothly on I-69, other times it's a parking lot. Relative to rush hour on the Eisenhower or Kennedy, you're correct -- I-69 is a cakewalk.

you're basically comparing two totally different neighborhoods as far as economics or *classes* go. higher income class in carmel (though with pockets of less income) lower income class in greenwood (though with pockets of higher income).
if class, being amongst your own and perhaps being a little *snobbish* (be honest with yourself) then you will probably be much happier in carmel.
johnson county for some reason has a reputation as racist with people from indpls though I have no idea why (I've lived in johnson county all my life). the people I know here are less racist than the people I work with in indpls. I've never ever heard of any kkk doings, meetings, etc. in the 50 years I've lived here. stupid teenagers are everywhere, however.
we do have very little *ethnic diversity* in this county, however if that is important, and that might be the cause of the opinion we are more racists than the average american. out of 140k in the county only about 1000 are non-white. I don't know why. again, I've never heard of anyone being unwelcome anywhere. or at least no more so than any other pre-dominantly one race area.
