Default Does the IN DMV branch still charge you tax on how much you paid for a car?

It used to be back in the mid 90's when I purchased a used car (usually 20 yrs. old or close) the title would allow me to put how much i wanted to say I paid for it.

But also in the mid 90's it used to cost $41 to tag a 20 yr. old car if you put on the title you paid $200 for it.

Does the Beech Grove DMV still allow this? or do they now pro-rate it and charge you what they think you paid?

I'm pretty sure the previous owner is required to write the selling amount before handing the title over to prevent this from happening. Else why not just write $1 in and get the lowest amount of tax possible?

Short answer: yes

The only time I did not have this happen was when I bought a car from AZ, and then they did the Blue Book on it and charged me taxes on that value.
