Default Southside of Indianapolis neighborhoods

I am looking at attending the University of Indianapolis this winter, and would like to live somewhere close to campus. I have looked at some rentals and was wondering which areas are ok to live as far as safety and proximity to shopping and restaurants. I know a little about what to expect about Fountain Square, but am looking into other areas as well.

1)Just south of Fountain Square around Palmer and Barth.

2) Just off of Raymond and State.

3) Just south of Shelby and Troy

4) Beech Grove

I have also considered Southport and Greenwood, but know enough about those areas that I don't really need to ask.

Thanks!

check out valley forge apartments at where shelby and Madison merge. It's actually at the corner of Lawrence Ave and Madison. I used to live there and liked it. It's an older apartment without all of the cool stuff some apartments have, but it's (at least was) a safe, friendly place to live. Each apartment also got one covered carport parking space. Also at the time it was full of mostly retired couples and students from UofI. Also, I liked the area enough to buy a house on Lawrence Ave.

I live in the Garfield Park South neighborhood, and love it. It's like the park is your own backyard. Close proximity to downtown, Fountain Square, U of Indy, and easy access to the interstate and Greenwood for shopping, etc. I always feel safe here, and everyone is very friendly and involved in the neighborhood.
