Meridian & 40th
Quick question - I'll be looking at a condo to rent near Meridian & 40th. Can anyone tell me if this is a safe area? If not, I'll just stick to looking in Greenwood next weekend when I get to Indy. My husband will be working downtown, but living near downtown seems kinda sketchy. I appreciate your help!!

Not a bad area, you should be fine unless you decide to become ganster and wonder around where you shouldn't be.

Meridian and 40th is getting as far south on Meridian as you want to get. The intersection of 38th & Meridian gets questionable as you move south.

Actually the whole area from Meridian east to Washington Blvd. south to 30th and then west again to Meridian is very nice with some 300,000 homes. Now west of Meridian by Crown Hill is a different story.

It is the edge of a decent area. You can walk north into Meridian Kessler or Butler Tarkington. However, the area around 38th is not a good one. See other threads. There have been some police problems around Illinois and 38th-40th. Probably safe for renting but if you are going to worry, I would suggest somewhere else. The Starbucks at 38th and Meridian was on the list of closures earlier.
So if the rent is really good go for it otherwise do a little more checking. Also, not much around it to walk to anyway.

ps, I live downtown inside I65 and find living right downtown is fine. It is some of the little more outer areas where there is more crime. See if you can find a condo right downtown. The sales have stopped and some might be available. I love walking downtown and there is a grocery, hardware store, huge library, parks, etc.

40th and Meridian is a facinating part of town. Walk 10 feet south and you might be in the cross fire of a gang shootout - walk 10 feet north and you are in a very quiet and very upscale neighborhood. (obviously it isn't quite like that - but almost)

Just got into Indy tonight and was able to check your replies. Thanks very much for your insight! I will check the condo out tomorrow, and if it doesn't strike me as some sort of utopian haven, I'll stick to a small commute from an apartment complex in Greenwood. Again, many thanks!!

After three days of an exhaustive search, I'm still looking. The apartments I've been to are either dated but in good areas or new but in not-so-great areas. Sweetana3 mentioned finding a place to rent (condo or apartment) directly in downtown. My husband will be working next to the capitol, so can anyone enlighten me as to any possible rentals? I appreciate any advice. (FYI - price isn't an issue.)

Here are a few listings. If price is no problem there are many many more condos in this price range and probally nicer if you look a little harder. Go to Realtor.com and look under map view and zoom into downtown Indy and you'll find what your looking for.
