Default Lilly Lay Offs?

Any truth that Lilly is in the process of major lay offs?

Hearing stuff about a restructuring project that may have major (700-1500) job cuts?

Rumor? Fact?

I have heard they are going through some severe layoffs, but don't know the details. You should search previous threads about the economy of Indianapolis where this is mentioned.

There's an article in the Indy Star today about how Wellpoint may start in the "medical tourism" business ... sending patients to India for non-emergency surgery. Not sure what that means for Wellpoint's bottom line, but I don't like it at all.

Sweet ... will a lot of these layoffs be early retirements? Has Lilly EVER had a mass layoff? Maybe Lilly is doing this to fend off what will be an industry by industry falling of dominos .. bankers, insurers, auto ....

I spent over 30 days in India and would NEVER consent to having anything done over there. They may have some fine hospitals and some fine doctors, but being 1/2 world away, no way.

Travel is hard enough when you are well. I would be surprised if they would send people business class and coach hell would not be good if you needed some kind of surgery. Either direction. These flights are usually 100% full both directions. I was so sick on one set of flights that I have no memory of even getting home.

Imagine the dangers of being sick in a foreign country. When we were there, they were advising all kinds of vacinations, taking our own needles, etc. We did not get anything but a cold and a very slight stomach upset but it would have been so easy even in the fanciest restaurants to have gotten food poisoning. Advice: Never visit the kitchens or the food stores. You will stop eating, period. I still want to return but would want to be well.

Lilly has known for several years that 2011 would be a difficult year (loss of patents) and they are making all kinds of changes. Changes in personnel systems, pay, medical, retirement, layers of management, etc. 1600 already qualified for retirement (80 points) by the end of next year but it looks like for certain areas (targeted) they want to do it fast. 12/1 is the date to first make an election and you have 12 weeks to try and find a new job. If you decide on 12/1 to go, you still get the 12 weeks pay. They really want them out the door. Who would want to work for free?
