Meridian Kessler Area?
My family and I are supposed to move to Indy from Dayton/Beavercreek Ohio. At first we looked at Carmel/Fishers area but now are considering the Meridian Kessler area. After visiting Alexandria, VA this past weekend we decided we love the older homes and their charm! So is MK the place to be in Indy, how are the taxes, crime, what area should we look, we want to walk to shops/resturants, the schools are not that much of a concern, kids are 1 and 3 and we could consider private if needed. Our price range will be 150-200K-only because we can't sell the home we have now in the upper 200's and we don't want that to happen again! Something charming but updated. Thoughts are needed!

Good luck finding something in that range. If you do it will be small and/or run down.
You had better budget for private schools as MK is in IPS.
Crime isn't bad, there is the occasional burglary.
Only shops within walking distance are at 54/College and Broad Ripple. These are mostly boutiques nothing big box. There is a new Fresh Market at 54/College.

You won't find something in that price range there. Maybe the very top end of 190, but it will be small and/or fixer upper. There are some fantastic houses there, but money talks.

The time for a house in that range are past. There are a few but the other posters are correct. Small or unmodernized, or a physical problem. There is more than just schooling to consider. MK is a very high taxed area of town now. You get no benefit to having an old house any longer.
If you can find a resonably priced school, there are some nice homes in Broad Ripple but smaller than you would find and maybe not a lot of kids for yours to play with.

This is one of the main reasons Fishers is such a popular area IMHO. 200K doesn't go very far in the MK or BR area, but in Fishers you can get a lot of house for 200K with great schools.

Here are a few to look at out of your desired area. Keep your options open there are many other nice places inside city limits that have good schools. These are either in Washington or Lawrence TWP which are pretty good. This whole area is very nice with some homes approaching half a million which is always good for investement purposes.

Yeah, I could never live up there. I wouldn't want to be that far away from everything. To each their own though, it's just a personal preference for me. His other points are all well noted too.

Everyone is right about the prices in that area, but the taxes wont be a problem for long. New tax regulations will limit taxes so they wont be any worse than a home of the same value in any other area.
You do have the nice charm of an older home and a shorter commute to downtown, but that ends the list of reasons to live in the MK area. Keep your options open, there are plenty of homes on the market now, so you will find what you want!
Good luck!
