Assisted Living
A little bit of background. I'm desperately seeking an Assisted Living facility that has some beds available for my wife. Due to the costs associated with such a facility, I obviously can't afford to keep our home or to even rent an apartment where we currently live. My brother and sister-in-law, who currently live in Indianapolis, have offered me a room in their home at no cost. I've started a job search for something in the area.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, modern, well-run Assisted Living facility? Any ideas of what the rates per month are there? I need to decide on whether I place her locally and just live in another state, or if we both move together to another state.

You are caught in one of the most diffucult issues. I had a coworker who went thru this with her elderly mother. There are two strata of assisted living, maybe three, that she found.
1. High end and costly with all services.
2. High end with choices of services like a menu with payment for each.
3. Medicare type homes with shared rooms in a variety of settings.
She ended up with a medicare type home due to income and found one with several people she knew personally but it took her some time and a lot of interviews.
Without knowing your needs or payment limits, it is really hard. There are a number of referral type services for the elderly but your message does not have a lot of info.
I input assisted living indianapolis into Google and found a huge number of choices with and without websites. There are some referral services but it depends on the need.

Please bear in mind that this is a permanent placement. The requirements I'm looking for are:
- a private room w/bath where she can have a closet and a dresser and some of her own belongings. A small refrigerator where she can keep drinks and snacks handy. A place where she can have her own TV and DVD and movies.
- Trained staff who can assist with transfer, bathing and toileting, taking meds, and dealing with things like commodes, catheters, GI tubes, and colostomy bags.
- She needs a high-fat high-calorie diet available 24x7. She needs assistance feeding herself. A place with a 24-hour cafe would be nice.
- a place with regular activities, outings, and transportation to doctors/appointments would be preferred.

Again, none of this will help without specifics to the company itself. I am sure if you call a number or all of the homes mentioned in the Google search and say the magic words "private pay" you will get someone to give you all the info you would need.
But keep in mind that Indiana is not at the top of the list for services renedered to any population and that is the reason our cost of living is low and our taxes have remained fairly low. There are a lot of waiting lists for all kinds of things from home support for elderly and disabled to Section 8 housing vouchers.
There were also a number of referral services listed on Google who may be better than City-Data.
I would say a general range of $3,000 per month would be the very low end for a possibly basic private pay private room, some services, meals, etc. and way up from there depending on what is needed in specialized support.
