Moving to Indy from Minnesota
My wife and just born son are planning to move to Indianapolis from the land of 10,000 lakes. We are a bi-racial couple, I am white and my wife is Korean. We need advice in a good area to live where we can raise our son. I would like to live somewhere on the outer belt of Indy with easy access to 465. My work is near the airport but I don't mind driving a half hour or so. Any suggestions on a good nieghborhood to live in where homes are not to expensive, ie I think the Villages of West Clay are out of the picture.

Personally I like the Southside. I've lived here now 11 years and dread the time I have to move.
There is another thread in the Indy area about the southside that I posted in so I would suggest you also read it.
One great thing is if you live on the southside for your job, try and stay close to US 31 or Madison Ave since that will give you easy access to 465. 465 to the airport from US 31 on the southside only takes about 10 minutes.
Also, you are looking at houses or apartments?

We are looking to buy a home. One home that interested me was about a mile east of North German Church Road on the East side of Indy. I have heard to stay away from the east side. Is this a far enough east that its outta of the bad neighborhoods?

I actually work fairly close to the area that you're looking at...
It's not a bad area and it's actually growing a good bit. Yes, fairly close are some rougher parts of town but Indy is weird like that. Literally you can go from a BAD neighborhood and a VERY NICE one simply by going one block in another direction. The good thing is the neighborhoods are not that bad. I would suggest that you drive the area before deciding to buy.
One thing I will mention though: That area is fairly close to the former Ft. Harrison. The main building there though is still in operation and they are planning on bringing another 2-3k people to work there. Needless to say, there will be a lot of former military.
So, what is my point? There are a lot of interracial marriages around the area. White and Asian is nothing unusual. Now for your wife, there is some good news. There is quite a bit of businesses around that cater to Koreans, along with a Korean Church.

German Church Road to the airport will make for a brutal commute. I would suggest Perry Twp. around Mortantown Road and Stop Eleven Road. Nice area and a pretty quick commute besides Bluff Road makes for nice access to downtown.

I just sent you a pm. I live in the Twin Cities but grew up in Indiana. North and northwest side is truly the best option. I don't think there is really a bad place to live in Indy as a bi-racial couple. Indy seems very accepting of bi-racial families. I would definitely recommend staying far away from the east side. Bad neighborhoods...similar to north Minneapolis. North/northwest side of Indy are kinda like the western 'burbs of Minneapolis, from Chaska up to Maple Grove...but without the sticker shock on the houses!!
Indy is a great place to raise a family! You will really love it down there...and the commute is soooo much less stressful than here in Minneapolis (assuming you live in the cities).
