What's the word on West Clay?
Hello...
I'm moving from Washington D.C. and I keeping hearing about a place called West Clay. I've looked at many real estate listings in the "Village at West Clay". Does anyone live there? If so, what can you tell me about it? It seems pretty nice. Are there lots of shops, etc. right there in the neighborhood itself?
Thanks

It's in the Carmel area, which is fine as long as you don't mind sitting in traffic looking at the bumper in front of you for an hour or two everyday.

I was there yesterday afternoon and I didn't think the traffic was bad at all.

West Clay is your typical "New Urbanist" development. It is built to be self contained, and walkable. The architecture "echos" older varieties. The development contains doctors, dentists, lawyers, ice cream parlors, restaurants, and plentiful park space.
However, the moment you leave West Clay, you find yourself on typical rural Indiana roads that lead to Carmel. Being from DC, you'll simply laugh at the traffic issues - but Hamilton County is getting worse for traffic.
West Clay is still under construction in parts - it has been pretty successful, and it is very affluent.
The only drawback is the annoyance of getting into the city of Indianapolis for more amenities. To me, I don't like being miles away from the central city, but that is a preference of mine.
good luck

Two words about the Villages of West Clay:
Big Bucks.
Gorgeous place though.

some of the new large homes with 5,000 sq ft or more in Washington Township are more expensive than many Carmel homes. There are some real deals in Carmel if you scout them out properly.
some Washington Township homes are listed at $132 per sq ft. Now that's what I call true *big bucks* for a house.

A big new urbanist development (under construction for years) out in the middle of no where. You have to drive everywhere. Some cutsy businesses but nowhere near much of anything. The closest shopping is Meridian and 146th with a new mall and some stores along the hiway. Not a truly attractive shopping area and the two sides are separated by a big hiway (no walking).
A lot of money just for the right to say you live in this place called Village of West Clay. Small lots. Lots of restrictions and rules (think Celebration in Orlando). Not built out yet.

what a pity that the planners of all these outlying towns around Indy did not build in mass transit systems. The thinking continues to be 'the car is king!'

I forgot to add that I remember no topography and few if any original trees. To me it looked like a gigantic corn/soybean field that a housing development was being built in. It always amazes me to see these big house developments built in a field with no privacy or separation of houses. I laughed when I saw 5 huge houses all backing onto a tiny retention pond with a great view of "the entrance road to the subdivision". Why put in two story windows where there is no view or you can be easily overlooked by all the neighbors. Imagine having a pool party next to the entrance road?
This was not far away from Village of West Clay.
