Relocating to Indy for husband to start med school (Evansville: apartments, renting)

Hello! We currently live in Ann Arbor, Michigan and will be moving to Indy in August. I am actually from Evansville and went to IU so I'm familiar with Indy but not really any specifics. My husband is going to the med school and while it would be nice to live close, my brother lived in the Canal Overlook apartments and they were ridiculously priced so I'm going to guess others around there are as well. We'd like to live close to IUPUI but at the same time in a very safe area. He doesn't mind the drive if it means we'll be safe. We don't have children yet, but plan to while he's in school so it'd be nice to live in a family friendly area. We also have 2 dogs so gotta have a place that allows that!
I have a good friend that lives in BroadRipple but having never actually been there yet, I'm not sure what it's like. I know there's a big bar scene there but is it safe? If anyone could suggest specific apartment communities that they'd recommend that would be a MAJOR help. Thank you so much in advance, I'm so glad I found this website.

My sister rents a house with two other girls right across from the school (she is in Med school in Indy) - her portion is $400/month.

You may want to look at renting a house in the Ransom Place area. I'm not sure what your budget is, but many med students live there as it is within walking distance to the school. My brother actually bought a house there and walked to the med school. They've been renting it out for about 6 years now and it's almost always been rented to med students. You may want to check craigslist.
