Default Has Indy went downhill since the 1900's/Is there much to do other than shop and eat?

I've never been to Indy. All I know about Indy is what I see from the net, so I could be off on this post, and I'm still considering moving there because I like other aspects of the city.

That being said, wouldn't this be easy enough to have somewhere around Indy? http://www.city-data.com/picfilesc/picc17747.php
Also, isn't the area long overdue for a major water park? Someone mentioned one is going to be built but I couldn't find any indication of it when I did an online search. I was surprised to find out that Porter/GARY has the biggest and best water park in IN. To make things worse, it seems like the 2nd biggest and best water park in IN is 30 min away from there in Merilville. That seems way out of place to me. Can anyone feel me on this? Is there much to do around Indy in the summer?

Yeah, if you want to visit a major water park, you'll have to travel outside of Indianapolis. There was a plan to build a water park in Greenwood; but the people who lived in the area blocked it with a petition. Not sure if that is the one you are referring too. That project is not yet dead, the city still wants to pursue it, but will now need to jump through more hoops. We do have some outdoor water recreation at Eagle Creek Park; and there is Splash Island in Plainfield, but that exhausts much of our aquatic adventures around here. We could (and have) talk about things we are overdue for here in Indy. A water park would be a welcome addition to the area IMO.

As far as the question in the topic; there are a lot of things to do other than shop and eat. The thing that tends to perplex new comers and out of towners is that in Indy, you often have to work to find things to do. This does not bother me as I have a good idea of how to entertain myself and where to find said entertainment; but if you are not living here, this can be tough. What types of things do you like? Perhaps we, the Indianapolis welcome wagon, can help you.

Depends on what it is you're looking for...if your in your 20's/early 30's check out Broad Ripple. Sports fan? Alot of relatively cheap (except for the Colts) tickets in the area. Like to exercise? Go for a run along the canal - what we could recommend would depend on what you like.

There are tons of great activities around here, the zoo, museums, canal, outdoor concerts, sporting events, conventions, etc. I don't see how anyone can be bored unless they choose to be.

MikiJanyne, are you talking about outdoor concerts during festivals or something else? Is there a link that shows what type of music and what bands? I would take my kids to the zoo some, but it's not something I really enjoy after once or twice. Same with museums. I would walk at the canal some. I'm not into football enough to go to a game. I might see a Pacers game once every year or two. I'd be up for going to Bloomington for college basketball games but I read those games there are always sold out. I guess I could try watching a game at Champaign, since it's only a couple hours from Indy.

I think IU basketball tickets are readily available this season

Purdue is in West Lafayette if you want another Big Ten option. Butler is in Indianapolis, and they are currently the highest ranked men's basketball team in the state. IUPUI also has basketball, they are fun even though the jungle feels like a high school gym.

They have a summer concert series at White River, and several hundred festivals it seems. Check this site for event info:

Butler's gym, Hinkle Fieldhouse, is a great place to see a game.

Eat shop and work.
Thats why I left Indianapolis.
Indy has some really good things about it people being one of them but I dont see alot of real improvement in the social venue over the past few years having just returned from a visit to the area.
