Talking young couple moving to indianapolis

Hi!
Me and my boyfriend are planning on moving to Indianapolis in august or september. We are now living in orange county california and i was raised in los angeles california. i was curious how you guys think the two place compare? hows the air and water pollution there? he plans on going to ITT, and i want to go to the medical trade school for pharmacy tech (not sure of the name) there. we have one car so one of us would be taking the bus to school and work. we have no professional training, just about 3 years of regular work experiance each. so do you guys have any advice for us or anything we should know? thanks!

We are relocating to Indy as well, but I am from the midwest and there isnt any type of major air pollution concerns as in LA...

Get a water filter, air quality is a non-issue though. Location of the ITT campus and where you will be going to school?

The site I looked at gave the Indy area a 10 out of 100 for water quality. West Lafayette was in the mid 40's.

Care to give a link? I lived in WL and near campus the water quality is PUTRID. I have a hard time believing Indy is worse.

I live in downtown indy and have used the tap water for drinking for over 30 years. No smell, no taste, no color. Never had an issue except for some hardness.

Air quality downtown not so good but better probably than other urban centers like LA, Chicago, Atlanta, etc. We are only 2 blocks from interstate and so deal with smog residue on the building and the sometimes awful gas smell (known to the air quality board already). But fairly good wind blows most away most of the time.

Low cost of living makes up for all of it.

There is a lovely 2bedroom/one bath brick renovated victorian for sale in Fountain Square for only $67,500. Now how many of those are for sale in OC?

welcome to the neighborhood! i grew up in LA and my wife and i lived in OC (our first son was born in irvine) before i moved out to indy 3 years ago. if you're a young couple, here's what i'd recommend as a fellow angelino:

1. if you have a bachelor degree, look into nursing (RN programs) since it's considered a high ROI line of work. my wife's got a master degree and she's going back to school for an accelerated program. projected demand for qualified nurses is huge for the next 25 years.

2. air, water, tax, gas, food are all better & cheaper, to the point where you might be shocked. the only thing i don't like is the no alcohol sale on sundays and car dealerships don't open on sundays - i get annoyed but it's acceptable.

3. lack of diversity: it's getting better, but having grown up in LA i'm used to diversity, so it can be kind of weird not seeing ANY latinos around or asians around.

4. schools are awesome here (public schools) compared with LAUSD.

5. folks here are NICE (most of the time). you'll love the slower pace of life here.

6. if you're looking for younger people hangout, broadripple has a lot of college student hangouts, or so i heard.

7. we have a real football team and they win games! i grew up with raiders and rams and they both suck, so i was glad they moved away from LA (49ers are better anyway, Montana/Young/Rice FTW)
