Lesbian family with a son
We are looking for an open-minded Mid-west city to move to with our 2 year old son. Is Indianapolis a gay friendly city, and are there many gay or lesbian families in the area? What neighborhoods would match us well? We aren't looking for a club scene, but for a nice safe place to raise our son with some art and culture. Any help would be much appreciated.

My partner and I live in Indianapolis, we have never had any problems. It seems that the areas in Indy with more art and culture are in a less desirable school district, but it is easy to get from one area to another. We live on the Northeast side in Castleton, and there are plenty of gay people around here, and we have one of the best school districts in the city. Looking more into the 'burbs, Fishers and Carmel are very accepting, and have excellent schools.
Where are you moving here from? I am sure that you will find Indy is a great place, Hoosiers are just naturally friendly, and I would be hard pressed to find someone who wouldn't welcome your family with open arms.

I have a lot of friends who are GLBT and they seem to concur that Indy is overall safe and friendly. Most of the suburbs to the West and North (Hendricks county to the west, Hamilton and Boone to the North) of Indy have wonderful school systems and are very nice. Don't believe me though, check into the schools at the Indiana Department of Education site and also check greatschools.net. That is a good site that offers rankings, stats, and even parent reviews. Finally, I would say search out the Websites of the towns you are considering, or their chamber of commerce.
Once last place that will be extremely helpful is the Indianapolis Star site, they have forums for each town.
Good luck! I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have!

I have friends who are like that and would definetly agree with your statement.I think that Indianapolis is very under appreciated when it comes to that. Maybe that is a good thing in a way.Indianapolis and Indiana itself is a very safe and naturally friendly part of the country. I attend a School District in Hendricks County that has been continously rated 4 stars for years now.

We currently live in Evansville, Indiana (Southern Indiana), and we come across quite a bit of homophobia here.

People down in Southern Indiana (IMO) are less open minded than people in Northern Indiana.
